“Going further down and down Needs new management”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

Have perviosly been more than 5 times. This visit at Twixmas 2011 and New Year 2012 Breaks turned into major disappointment. Published information on major events cancelled. Hogmany Gala Dinner was shocking for 8 of our party of 9 people. Most of the previous Staff were fired or left leaving a gap with poorly trained Staff coping with great difficulty through poor Management and very limited training. Drawing room sometimes closed. Cocktail Bar more like a morgue than a Bar and only opened once during 6 day stay.Public romms badly needing attention. Cammys Bar not always open. Bar prices above average for area, when you could find them open. Complaint letter to GM dated 5th January 2012 not responded too.

Dear tacmoira,

Thank you for your comments following your visit to Thainstone House Hotel & Spa over the New Year period.

We welcome all feedback, both positive & negative as frankly, only by accepting where we might have gone wrong can we focus our efforts & resources in those areas where improvement is needed. From our previous discussions, I am well aware that there were elements of the New Year package for 2011/12 which you did not enjoy this year. Overwhelmingly, the feedback from the over 100 guests attending last year was positive. and all comments received, both positive & negative, have been considered when forming our plans for 2012/13.

However, I must take issue with some elements of your comments, which incidentally were also addressed in the responce sent to your letter of 5th Jan. If it is the case that you did not receive the responce sent, please do contact me privately through the Trip Advisor system and I will ensure a further copy is sent.

To suggest that many staff had been dismissed or have left through grievance is factually incorrect and misleading. Whilst It is easy to be publicly attacked, it would be wholly unprofessional for me to discuss specific individuals in this public forum. I do believe you have been mislead in your views by a disgruntled former employee, who we are lead to believe has made a number of attempts to discredit the business publically since their departure.

I am also somewhat at a loss as to some of the observations you make about facilities in the hotel. I can recall no time over the New Year period when the Drawing Room was closed, nor any occasion when Cammies Bar was not open as per the published schedule of opening times. Indeed, on a number of nights we opened Cammies Bar late into the night when normally it would be closed.

On a more positive note, you may be pleased to hear we are drawing up plans for work on a number of bedrooms along with some public area works which we hope to commence with shortly.

As I commented to you in my previous responce to your letter, my focus is on the future of this business; building a stong, well trained team to deliver excellent customer service in the lovely surroundings which we have here at Thainstone. Inevitably, this requires change and in some quarters, change is feared and resisted. However, in current climes, any individual or business which does not adapt and change, is more likely than ever to fail.

In closing, I am genuinely frustrated and dissapointed that you did not enjoy last year's New Year programme as much as previously. I can fully understand your disspointment and frustration, that some of the smiley faces you know of old from Thainstone House were not hear to great you this time. The fact that some of those absent faces, who had left before my appointment, are now returning to the business speaks for itself.

From all the team at Thainstine House, we genuinely look forward to welcoming you back
again next time round..

“wedding reception”

My husband and i had our wedding reception here, i would never advice anyone to have one there. Dont get me wrong the day went to plan, but the after Service was rubbish. I asked one member of staff to keep everything from the day, and i would pick up my cake topper and flowers etc up in the morning, it took a week to actually get anywhere with the manager.
He kept replying we have lost the keys for the room where everything is kept, but after a week he actually told me everything was inthe bin. I was so upset all my keepsakes where binned.
For the best day of my life i have only photos!
The manager said he would buy things for me to replace them, but thats not the same some items i had hand made, and they ment alot to me so they cant be replaced!
Very poor service forthe money my dad spent.

Dear Lynne B

Thank you for your comments,

However, I am somewhat confused as I do not believe I have had the pleasure of meeting you personally and certainly do not know about any missing items relating to any wedding held here at Thainstone House recently . I'm afraid I have to catagorically refute any suggestion that you spent a week "getting nowhere" with the manager as I am not aware of your situation at all.

As the General Manager of this hotel, i would imagine any bride having lost personal items from the wedding day would be in contact with me directly to resolve the situation. I would encourage you to contact me privately through the Trip Advisor system with further details so that I can further investigate personally.

As a professional wedding venue, hosting over 60 wedding a year, we are experienced, professional and well accustomed to dealing with bridal parties; before, during and after the big day! We simply would not dispose of items from the wedding without your express consent.

I would encourage you to contact me directly.

regards,

Barry Clark

“Worst Hotel yet”

We were staying over for two nights in the Thainstone hotel as part of my brothers wedding party,I was his best man,we were a party of four, two adults, two kids (11 +3) our room was horrible, for a family room it was a disgrace, our room was at the top of a steep winding staircase, not suitable for kids, the carpets on the stairs were very worn, and the whole place smelt musty, our room was even worse, stayed in cleaner slums, carpet had black patches all over it, it turned out to be hair from previous people who had stayed in the room, curtains were hanging off rail, beds were four squashed into a horrible dank space, there was nothing modern at all in this room, wardrobe smelt of damp, when we complained were told nothing else available, could maybe find us another hotel nearby, not great, eventually they founf us a much better room, think it was bridal party suite,so much better but could only have it for one night, second nights room was ok, not great, towel rail gaffer taped up, section of bed hanging off, even after writing to head office we still never got any compensation our reduced rate, would never stay here again even if it was the last hotel on the planet, staff were condesending, over heard them say, give them a bottle of wine to keep us happy.Poor poor poor, faulty towers at its best

Room Tip: Dont stay here

Dear Simon D,

Thank you for your comments following your recent visist to Thainstone House Hotel. I was dissapointed to say the least to read your comments.

Having personally inspected the rooms in question, I have to contest that I found rooms which meet our rigerous & demanding housekeeping standards, although I would be the first to admint that the room in question has dated decor & furnishings. Never the less, my apologies for any shortcomings in our usually high standards on the occasion of your visit.

I am sure you will be pleased to hear therefore that we are currently planning a reurbishment programme for this whole area and hope to proceed shortly with the 8 rooms in this wong of the hotel.

Best regards,

Barry Clark

“not the best hotel we have stayed in!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 December 2011

my hubby and i stayed here recently, the car park is ok, and there were plenty spaces to park.
on entering the main entrance we were faced with the sickly, musty odour, i have no idea where it was coming from, but it smelled distinctly like an old folks home!
we arrived at 4pm and were hoping to use the leisure facilities before having dinner....we were advised by the receptionist that this would not be possible as it was the festive timetable and it closed at 4pm! was slightly disappointed with that but never mind.
our room was small and basic and overlooked what looked like the staff buildings, the bed was comfy enough, there was a modern tv but the bathroom was pretty scabby- bath had what we thought originally was a blob of excrement on it but it turned out to be a large piece of rust! one of the towels was dirty and the heated towel rail was broken....apart from that the room was very warm.
we chose not to eat dinner at the hotel and drove the short distance to Inverurie and had a 3 course meal for £10 each.
Returning back to the hotel, the fire alarm went off 3 times in 2 hours due to the coal fire downstairs activating the smoke detectors!
Breakfast was pretty poor....for what they charge for a full scottish breakfast (think it was £15.95)...1 sausage, 2 bits of bacon, 1 slice of black pudding, 1 tattie scone, spoon of beans , a fried egg and a sppon of fried mushrooms!......omg! you can buy a breakfast pack from tesco that feeds 4 for less than £5!...there was no way i would pay their prices for breakfast...what a rip off!!
continental brekkie consisted of a pretty poor selection of cereals, fresh (tinned) fruit consisted of grapefruit or satsumas!, there were yoghurts, some apples and oranges , and absolutely miniscule croissants (finger size things!)..i asked if there were tongs to pick up the croissants and i was told to "just use my fingers!!"
we got 6 half pieces of cold toast, and there was no marmalade on our table....just 6 small jars of blackcurrant jam!!!
you helped yourself to orange, pineapple or apple juice.
the waitress was very helpful, but the dining room was filthy...crumbs on the window sills, the carpet was filthy and the chairs were scabby and worn!
we checked out at 9.30am and i was shocked to hear that this hotel has the ordacity to charge £2 for credit card payments!!!.....understandable if your bill was less than £10....but when some of these roooms are priced at £150, why should you be expected to pay this ?bank charge?.....i have stayed in hundreds of hotels and i have never, ever been asked to pay £2 for paying with my credit card! i paid cash purely because there was no way i was paying this surcharge!
we got our bed and breakfast for a good deal and we felt that even this was too much for the quality of the room and food provided!
i doubt if i would stay here again!
