We stayed in the Merce hotel in Pineda De Mar for 7 nights from the 28th Sept - 5th oct. The bus driver dropped us off down the road and vaugely pointed to the direction of the hotel. Its basically the building next to the church. The check in process was quick and painless and the rooms were of a nice standard (apart from a wobbly sink in the two rooms we had). We survived 2 nights in one room (149) then had noisy neighbours so asked to be moved (room 252). The first room had two single beds pushed together and a bigger balcony facing out on to the road. The second room we had had a double bed, a smaller balcony facing out onto quieter road. Both rooms had a bath, bidet and a powerful shower. They also had a hairdryer and clean towels were provided everyday. There was a TV in the room which hd 2 english channels BBC and CNN news so prepare to come back brainwashed.
The rooms seem to have new electric key card locks on the doors and have done away with the standard lock and key method so I dont know if this has improved security. We found anyone could come and go as they pleased and sometimes the receptionist was nowhere to be seen by the desk however saying this we had no problems with security. We locked our belonging in our bags and put them in the wardrobe everytime we went out. I would recommend they attach the headboards to the bed as it must annoy the neighbours everytime you adjust your pillow whilst watching tv, the headboard is loose and only there for show so it bangs against the wall.
Breakfast was ok and almost resembled that of a full english breakfast. I would recommend they choose different sausages rather than cocktail style frankfurt sausages. The streaky bacon could be crispier and the eggs wold be nicer if the yolks were runny and not rock hard but it was cheaper to accept the breakfast they had rather than buy one at the resort as their seemed to be not alot of english food about. They also had orange, apple and tropical fruit juice aswell as tea and coffee. Also some sweet breads, muffins, croissants etc.
There was a supermarket called the carrefour which we found to be really cheap but there were no self catering facilities in the hotel. If you are doing this holiday using hand luggage only as we did then it is handy to buy shampoo (1 euro for one litre) and shower gel at this supermarket. Also ice creams are alot cheaper (80 cents for 4 cornetto style cones).
The trip to Barcelona by train took about 1 - 1.5hours and cost around 8euros return. We didnt see any pickpockets and I was trying really hard to look for them but we still took caution and divided our money and belongings. We did see a couple of gypsies busking and begging but nothing to worry about.
Apart from the noisey neighbours the only other gripes were the nocturnal bin men that seem to appear betwen 1 - 2am and the bells chiming from the church but to be honest the church wasnt that bad where we were and acted and a good indicator of time.
There is nothing to do at the resort and not many english speaking locals. I noticed the younger resturant staff were english speaking mainly. Food is not that cheap unless you want hot dogs all the time. I would recommend the chinese buffet (bear in mind noches means evening in Spanish so it will be a little more than advertised). I think 9.95euros daytime and 12.95euros evening time but so much choice you wont regret it.
If your feeling bold then a walk to Blaines cane be done in half and day, you shall walk along the beach close to Santa Susanna then Malgret De Mar (plenty of food and touristy shops here) then past a nudist beach and onto Blaines where there are a few good eating spots along the beach front.
We then chose to another day to walk upto Santa Susanna through a hillside track and past an adventure park which was nice to get away from the all the concrete in Pineda De Mar.
We paid £145 each for flights accomodation on a bed and breakfast basis which we didnt think was too bad. We did see it advertised for slightly cheaper earlier in the year but then again we met others who had paid more. We booked through onthebeach website and put in the comments box that we would like a balcony. All in all I am happy with my Spanish holiday experience as for the same price we saw weekend breaks to Barcelona. I dont think you will regret booking your stay at the Merce hotel.
Room Tip: Ask for a room with an outward facing balcony either facing in the direction of the sea (not that yo...
