“Very friendly stay”

We expected a normal hotel with its quirks, however we got a very valuable stay at this hotel. The hotel staff was ALWAYS ready to answer your questions with great attention and devotion.
The room was clean enough but it was a twin room. I had forgotten to mention I wanted a double room at reservation time, and I went to the reception. They literally spent 10 minutes trying to find us a room. They did get us a room, but only the next night and forward. The night after, we got the other room, which was under the roof top. So less natural light and a lot hotter (it was 32º C outside at day), but we had this king size bed for no extra charge.
The location was truly stunning, right in the middle of the Pyrenees, at the foot of the Forratata cliff. The swimming pool was very clean and relaxing (sometimes a bit too warm - sunshine shining through the glass), with free steam bath and jacuzzi. Also, there was a free fitness room and you could order a massage or other welness treatment (at your cost). There was a small game hall with pool tables (€ 2 per game) and a big lounge with 40+'' tv and sofas.
The meals were a bit disappointing, being Belgian we like fine food and although there was an extremely wide choice (10+ meals at a time), the quality was not always satisfying (vegetables were not always fresh but rather from jars, strange deserts, ...). The breakfast was likewise very broad for choice, but some things were just not that tasty (and I'm used to liking almost everything).
Free parking outside, if you come early, after about 17:00 (5 PM) you'll have to try to find a spot a bit further away (but all within 1 minute walk).
In the winter this is a very popular ski resort, but in the summer I would greatly recommend visiting El Formigal for the beautiful nature and peace you will find there, surrounded by huge mountain peaks and lakes.
Make sure you get a good deal on this hotel.
There is no restaurant at day, but you can have a snack in the (rather expensive) bar. I would suggest going down town and visiting the improvised bakery (which offers pizzas, sandwiches, ...) at a much more affordable rate.

“Much better than expected”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2008

We had booked here for a 3 day break to do some walking in the Pyrenees. Then after reading the previous reviews I had some concerns. However, our experience was very good. The hotel is at the top of the village of Formigal - on one hand this is positive as you get good views of the mountains but on the other it is a bit of climb from the centre.
The hotel itself is impressive as you enter the reception (though could also be described as intimidating). It is definately more modern than traditional. The standard bedroom is large and comfortable though for an extra 19 euro you can upgrade to a superior room with terrace (we found out too late). The staff (reception and restaurant) were all friendly and helpful. Due to personal reasons we had to cancel the day we were due and then rebooked the day after but now with child in tow - this appeared to be no problem and everything was prepared on our arrival. The pool and gym were good - on 2 days we had them to ourselves.
The restaurant (buffet) has excellent views and the food was good and varied.
I have no hesitation to recommend this hotel for a summer visit - I would now like to try in winter.

“Melia Deception”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 March 2008

Well, where do I start?
there goes; the facilities of the hotel where okay, except for the "swimming tank" and the jakuzzi & turkish bath, so dirty...
And the personal, with some exceptions, were very unfriendly and uninformed about services and facilities of the hotel.
The meals were a bit unusual, only the first ones to arrive to the dining room, were well served,
About the stay at Formigal, I can only say that the next time I will stay at another hotel, the snow and slopes were only the best that I`ve experienced.

  • Liked — The views and rooms
  • Disliked — The service and the "heated" swimming pool

“Very confortable, excelent facilities and not fancy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2008

Comfortable, wide warm clean rooms.
A great hamman, good inside pool and jacuzzi (no children after 19:00h). Good massage service (extra payment).
Effective front desk.
Wi-Fi in public areas, reasonably fast, free.
Good service in general.
Half-board food average/good.

For skiers:
Lobby store, also with rental material (opening hours are Spanish).
Forfait reservation at hotel.
It is far from the slopes, but then at Formigal every hotel is. They have a shuttle service that seemed to be good (we travel by road, had our own car, didn't use it).

We went for 4 days with our 5 year old. We all had an excellent time.

The hotel had everything we needed AND was not fancy or expensive.

  • Liked — Good and simple. Hamman.
  • Disliked — Would be nice to have free Wi-Fi in rooms
