Hotel
It takes half an hour in a taxi to get from the airport to the hotel (47 euros). The hotel is airy and clean with a large foyer. Checking in provided no problems. On the first day we explored the hotel, beach and local area. The pool area is adequate, however, the water is freezing and mostly frequented by children. The sun beds are free (which is a bonus) however, there is no bar near the pool. The beach is a stone’s throw away from the pool area. It is a wonderful vast beach which seems to go for miles in both directions. It is very calm, quiet and offers a chance to relax/read a book/. Unlike the pool the sea isn’t too cold and wonderfully clean.
Resort
The resort caters prominently for Spanish and Germans. I was told the area is effectively a Spanish resort so it differs from the kitsch Benidorm/Costa Del sol resorts which is refreshing (I.e. no lager louts, loud music, or cheesy nightclubs) There are a lot of families, thousands of older people and a few odd couples. There are a number of restaurants and bars. The restaurant food is not the best – it is simple cheap holiday restaurant food (omelette, chips and a variation of this … though the portions are huge). There are loads of Tapas bars but after a few days you may get sick of eating the limited options on the menus. I longed for a good restaurant and a hearty meal away from omelettes, chorizo, and garlic cheese. The breakfast buffet is good and offers a choice of food.
Entertainment
As the mayor of the town owns most of the hotels in the area, there is a ban on live music in any of the bars (i.e. to keep people in the hotels to experience the in house entertainment!) This is ridiculously bureaucratic and hilarious. The “playluna hotel” entertainment was dreadful – unbelievably bad. It was like something out a comedy. You can imagine it - Caberet with sub-standard entertainers. I’m still in shock now.
Best thing to do it get out of the hotel to the bars. There are a few English bars which aren’t the best, German, Spanish and Irish bars as well. They all lacked any atmosphere and all they needed was live performers or something!!
Rude Hotel Staff (PLEASE READ!)
The cleaners, security guards, the people in charge of the sun beds on the beach were nice. However, some of the hotel staff are incredibly rude. Truly awful!! There was one particular women called “Gema” (on reception) who lacked any customer services skills. It was service with a scowl and clearly she begrudged offering a service to guests ( or us anyway) . I was shocked by her rudeness and how she even got a job their in the first place. There was another lady on the bar who embarrassingly rude and rolled her eyes when every time we ordered a soft drink/beer from her. Having experienced many hotels on my travels the staff at the playluna were the “worst”.
Overall, the beach is heavenly, the food is average, the bars are fine if you are after a quiet drink, the hotel is clean and spacious, the staff are unashamedly rude.
