Before I go into details, can I say we had a fab holiday, really relaxiing time and met loads of interesting people.
I have been on typical tour operator holidays for approx 20 years and this was the most "unbrits abroad" one I have ever been on, despite it being advertised in the Thomas Cook brochure as being family friendly, with entertainment, etc, etc,
We arrived just about lunch time after a very early morning flight so got on bikini, got kids organised and down to pool bar for something to eat and drink. All they serve is crisps, tapas and drinks. Kids refused to eat tapas which were prawns and tuna mainly and the bar tender didn't speak any english so couldn't find out about where else to eat. Off we trotted to reception where I was told we could eat lunch in the restaurant (approx cost for 2 adults and 2 small children was 50 euros) otherwise I was told, very rudely, that I would have to go outside the hotel and find somewhere to eat.
Again, off we all trotted, husband in tow, and found a lovely little bar/restaurant nearby (you will stumble on them) where we contemplated life etc, etc, in the sunshine with a drink and a reasonably priced meal - everyone happy!
After this, back to the hotel we went, to the pool, where we found that we were perhaps the only english speaking family there. There is an animation team who, from what I saw, organised water polo in the afternoon and went around jotting down names from their friends on sun loungers to join in. We were never invited to join. This didn't bother us, we had a drink from the bar (requested in spanish) and relaxed, enjoyed playing with the children, and the fantastic sunshine.
We tootled off to our room which was immaculately presented, (but just not ideal for two adults and two children aged 5 and 2, as the children were expected to share a sofa bed) just before dinner (1930 - 2200) as we were half board, had ourselves a few drinks from the local supermarket (see top tips below) and off we popped about 2000. We found the food available to be fantastic as we love seafood and salads, fresh fruit etc, however, if you pine after typical english fayre you will be bitterly disappointed. They do attempt french fries, bacon, sausages and scrambled eggs but it's just not the same!
After dinner, the children were desperate to get to the kiddies disco which had always been a huge hit for us, on all our previous holidays, however, it was all in spanish and our children just couldn't understand how or when to join in and no effort was made to accommodate anyone other than spanish speaking, so we left.
Having said all of the foregoing, we adapted and had a fabulous holiday together but found out the following during our two weeks, which I hope will benefit you:
TOP TIPS
(1) Supermarket Margar is located out the side door of the hotel, about 100 meters, its through the car park on your right - sells everything from a needle to an anchor. We found it great for lunches, bought their fresh baked bread, local tomatoes, ham and cheese and water, which fed four of us for under 5euros for four for lunch - just keep an eye on the till receipt, almost every time I went, the checkout staff would charge an additional item of something i'd bought.
(2) During the evening (after dinner), take a walk along the beach promenade which is again out the side door of the hotel, past the supermarket and straight ahead. Until we did this on the third night, we thought the whole resort was completely deserted but found that this is where everyone seems to gather. If you have children, you can walk to the gorilla park (10 min walk to the left side of the promenade) where, for 4 euros, they get 30 mins in a soft play/bouncy castle/ trampoline and train ride play area. Ours loved it and asked to go back every night.
(3) There is a soft play and entertainment area opposite the supermarket Margar which comes alive during the evening, again thats 4 euros for a half hour, plus you have to buy pop socks from their machine for another euro. Kids loved it,
(4) There is a bus that leaves almost every half hour from the hotel golf trinidad, its on the same street as the supermarket Margar up to the left and it costs a euro per person. We were told that the children should be free but some of the drivers demanded we pay for them, however, others let them on for free. The bus takes you to the Port (where the boat trips leave from), to the Grand Plaza Shopping centre (worth a visit but found places like Toys R Us etc to be overpriced, great supermarket in there though - just like Tesco, even has clothes, also cinema showing current english films - Oce Age 3 was on whilst we were there) and eventually onto Almeria,
(5) If you're into fitness, the gym in the hotel is pants. just a few weight machines and the only treadmill was broken for the two weeks we were there so the option is to either grab an early morning run (before half eight) as it becomes quite hot or a later evening one. I asked at reception about when the treadmill was going to be fixed but got little response. There is a gym in the Hotel Grande Bahai (opposite supermarket Margar) which charges 5euro a session or 20 euro a week but is not open on Saturday or Sundays.
(6) Should you need the services of a laundrette, go next door to the Hotel Neptuno which only charges 3 euros for a wash and dry. Reception staff exceedingly friendly there. Our one charges 7 euros.
(7) We went to the local water park with the local bus from the Golf Trinidad which worked out loads cheaper than the holiday company advertised one. Its just fab - kids loved it, no height restrictions, etc, apart from the real big slides - great day out for us. Probably worth getting a taxi home (9 euros) as it's a bit of a walk along a busy road to the nearest bus stop. Easy enough for jumping off bus there though,
(8) Trip to the mountains we loved, if you like history, culture, etc, went to see local pottery being made, trip to cave houses, fab scenery and informative historic input,
(9) Google Earth Roquetas de Mar before you go - its called the greenhouse of Europe and all the white rectangles you see are plastic greenhouses growing tomatoes, corguettes, etc, etc,
(10) HAVE A GREAT HOLIDAY, ENJOY THE SUN AND CHEAP WINE XX
