La Tinaia is a modest estate set in hills to the south-west of Florence. Views are fabulous, accommodation in the old farmhouse well proportioned and comfortable, and the photos of it really do not do it justice. Even though it rained over Florence torrentially for the first two of our 14 days in June, the climate is perfect for a stay-in or wander-about holiday.
Staying-in means you get the very fine pool, the gardens (with lawns automatically watered from below, amazing) the views over Chianti hills and the estate's vineyard and olive groves, and an easy walk to a good restaurant (which caters mostly for meat-eaters), where there is a little shop.
Wandering-about means walking locally, on roads or footpaths, or more likely - Florence, a city easy to love. A 10-minute drive around the hills takes you to the Scandicci tram-stop, and from there it's 15-20 minutes to the city centre on the ideal little tramway that runs frequently and cheaply.
Tina and Franco are the owners. Just perfect, always helpful and knowledgeable, and they have furnished the place in Tuscan up-market farmhouse style. The gardens are a treat, as is the weekly dinner for guests, which for us starred the Tuscan Boar shot by Franco for fiddling with their vines. Add to that their own silver-label Chianti, and a great evening was had by all.
Go there. You won't regret it. And we will, again.
Room Tip: We stayed in 2 rooms, Cypressi and Vigna. The former is large, the latter looks small in photos but...
