We stayed three nights in freezing winter, breaking up a trip to Florence. Did Mary Shelley really write Frankenstein here? Maybe inspired by the creaking pipes. It's a curious old hotel, not without charm, beautiful in parts, noisy in the winter winds, built beside a steep hill and around a swish spa that seemed mostly empty to us. Our room on the third floor was long and thin and far too hot. The hotel bar was vast and comfy but a little overpriced and empty, but then there were not many people staying - it gets busier at weekends. The staff were friendly, so full marks for that, particularly the tall desk manager who always had a smile and was always helpful. the little town around had bar, pizzeria (2) and osteria (2), so plenty of options. Bet of all is the location - 10min train ride to Pisa, 30min bus ride to Lucca (bus better than train as gets you inside the walls. Only downside were the hotel's five star prices, but no nasty surprises.
