“ghost of Frankenstein”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

We stayed three nights in freezing winter, breaking up a trip to Florence. Did Mary Shelley really write Frankenstein here? Maybe inspired by the creaking pipes. It's a curious old hotel, not without charm, beautiful in parts, noisy in the winter winds, built beside a steep hill and around a swish spa that seemed mostly empty to us. Our room on the third floor was long and thin and far too hot. The hotel bar was vast and comfy but a little overpriced and empty, but then there were not many people staying - it gets busier at weekends. The staff were friendly, so full marks for that, particularly the tall desk manager who always had a smile and was always helpful. the little town around had bar, pizzeria (2) and osteria (2), so plenty of options. Bet of all is the location - 10min train ride to Pisa, 30min bus ride to Lucca (bus better than train as gets you inside the walls. Only downside were the hotel's five star prices, but no nasty surprises.

Room Tip: Facing front and side have better views out over the town as opposed to out over the steep hill at b...

“Good stay! Love the spa service!”

I enjoyed the stay at this hotel. I know it needs some repairs here and there but my room was soooo nice, frescos in the ceiling, huge room and yes, clean bathroom. The food was really good and they treated me kindly. The spa was awesome, I enjoyed the pool in the top, the grute, turkish bath and all the rest. It's very quite yes but I guess that's what I was looking for. I traveled with a local so there was not the regular tourist approach I suppose. I will love to return.

“Well overrated”

We stayed there in July, and having booked for 10 days, left after only 5. We don't know whow the hotel is rated 5 star. It was difficult to find, the food was poor but expensive, and be warned, there are only two other restaurants in the village! Room was passable, but shower was dirty and overflowed when used. Pool is very small and so hot, it was like having a bath. There was no continuous waiter service by the pool - he appeared once every couple of hours at best. Reception staff appeared friendly but were never able to help - once, they tried to give us directions which actually would have taken us the opposite way entirely. Porter was very grumpy. Would not recommend!

“For customers absolutely mediocre and unpretentious.”

Disappointing, definitely not a five star hotel, absolutely do not understand how it can be a part of The Leading Hotels, absolutely do not understand how people can evaluate it with comments on trip fabulous. But these positive comments are true? Or have I stayed in another hotel with the same name? But have you ever been in a five star hotel? you know what the word luxury? elegance? kindness? here is all this if you're an experienced Hotel certainly do not find it here, forget it. No one at the door on arrival, parking hard to narrow and small, if you have a car of some value to be very careful because other cars are all parked haphazardly. Get off your bags from the car by yourself, because they realize first that you arrive half an hour has passed. Small lobby, no flowers, smelly .... Corridors to the rooms with peeling walls, lighting ridiculous, small rooms and in my opinion not too clean. No view. Restaurant indecent. Breakfast horrible. If you usually attend class hotels do not come here. For customers absolutely mediocre and unpretentious.

“Laid Back Luxury in Quaint Tuscan Village”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2011

We found out about this hotel from Luxury Hotels of the World. It is a very attractive property that has some gorgeous rooms. It is really quite elegant yet it probably needs a little work but not too much. A little cosmetic upgrade here and there. Call it a 4.5 star hotel. The food was very good. The food was very good and they had a guitar player one night who was fantastic so they really care about the quality at this hotel across the board.

The staff was very nice and helpful and made some great suggestions. For Northern Tuscany, this is really nice option that has easy access to Pisa, Lucca and the Italian Riviera such as Viareggio and Forte di Marme.

It was one of the better places we stayed and San Giuliani was a REAL non-touristy Tuscany town.
