“Fabulous Fattoria Fregoli "Il Macchione"”

Farmhouse? What an understatement! It's an estate on a huge acreage. The beautiful stone villa is perched high on a hill with a 360 degree spectacular panoramic view. Lavender and rosemary bushes perfume the air. You can pluck a ripe olive off a tree. Clusters of chairs are sprinkled throughout the extensive well manicured gardens. The infinity pool visually draws you over the edge and suspends you above a golden sweeping Tuscan landscape. The view is so magnificent that you are truly tempted to just sit and contemplate the world rather than leave and explore the surrounding environs.

Our breakfast was outstanding. "Mama" has owned two restaurants and has a passion for baking. When you view the breakfast offering pictured below, you two will wonder how she keeps trim. It's a miracle! On the subject of food, do buy and/or try their own olive oil. It is excellent. If you are a serious coffee buff, you'll be happy to hear that they offer superior coffee beans along with a sophisticated cappuccino machine, available to guests anytime!

The cool apartments with wooden beams and Tuscan hand painted family furnishings reaffirmed you were really in Tuscany. We had a full separate dining area combined with the kitchen had we wished to cook. The accommodation was immaculate.

Unfortunately there were no laundry facilities; if you wanted fresh towels there was an additional charge as there is for a pool towel. Also the owners are off premises once everyone has checked in and after they have finished the breakfast clean up. Mind you everything was in perfect working order so that was not a problem. We stayed for four nights. They did not do any housekeeping that we noticed. So sorry, you have to make your own bed or not!

The Signora's family has owned the surrounding land for several generations. They own and run their olive oil factory just across the road. Personally I believe that "Il Macchione" is more a labour of love than a business. Their rates are most affordable and definitely excellent value.

The quaint small town of Pienza not only is a UNESCO world heritage site, but it is in the heart of Tuscany and the perfect spot for heading out in all directions.

Needless to say this B&B or farmhouse is almost fully booked for next year. We felt so lucky to have found and stayed in this intimate family villa.

“Beautiful farmhouse 2 km from Pienza”

We stayed at Fattoria Fregoli for 3 nights this month and just loved our apartment, La Torre, and the grounds. La Torre was upstairs and has a large kitchen, 2 bedrooms - one is upstairs in the tower, hence the name - and 2 beautiful tiled bathrooms, and is well decorated and comfortable. It's well-equipped for cooking, has window screens (not everyone does in Europe), beautiful country style furniture - some appeared to be hand painted - and beamed ceilings in all the rooms. There were also 3 other apartments of varying sizes. If you look at the website, the pictures look just like the rooms. Breakfast was included and it consisted of many types of gorgeous cakes and tarts made by the mother and aunt of the owner. They looked professional! There were also meats and cheeses, yogurt, a bit of cereal, rolls, coffee, cappuccino, tea and juices. We certainly never went hungry. Breakfast was either served in the large common room or outside in the courtyard. The grounds were immaculate and the pool was not only perfectly clean and sparkling blue, but looked over the most amazing scenery. The pool was one of those "infinity" pools which looks like there is no edge, and although the water was cold, it was still a pleasure to be in it surrounded by the hills of Tuscany, and wheat and sunflower fields. It also had a jacuzzi section - push the button and sit in the bubbles. There were little groupings of chairs around the property, some antique farm equipment which used to be used to separate the seeds from the sunflowers, and lots of beautiful lavender around the property. The owner was very sweet and friendly and spoke English, but he was often not at the farmhouse as it was harvest time for the wheat. When he was there, he suggested some places to go and some good restaurants and gave us maps and brochures. We were able to watch the farm equipment cutting the wheat and it was all done so fast! Everyone in Tuscany seemed to be doing the same thing and in a matter of a couple of days the landscape went from fields of rippling wheat to hundreds of hay bales glistening in the sun, but I digress. When the owner wasn't around, a family member sometimes was (the reason I gave a 4 out of 5 on service is that there were times when no family member was there - when someone was there they were always helpful) and although she didn't speak English and wasn't there all the day, she was as sweet as can be. While there was no washing machine, they were willing to take laundry to be done for 5E per kilo. That was a huge help! In addition to the wheat, the family also makes their own olive oil so we bought some on our last day. They were going to give us a tour of the presses, but someone in the family got sick so we couldn't do that. They didn't cook dinner, but being only 2 kilometers from Pienza, it was a quick ride to one of quite a few great restaurants. If you read reviews of Tuscany, many people say don't drive at night because it's easy to get lost (which I don't agree with having been there), but the drive from Pienza to Fregoli was easy since there was big blue sign at the one turn so it was really just about impossible to miss. All in all, we would definitely go back - we loved this place!!!

“A belated great review”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 August 2009

We stayed here over a year ago and have been meaning to write a review since the day we got back. We had a wonderful time here, the apartment we had (La Capriata, one of four on site) was huge, well fitted out with anything you could need and very comfortable. Breakfast was available every morning in one of the common areas and the selection of homemade treats and cakes was unbelievable. The pool area is fabulous and has a great view of the Tuscan hills. It's a probably a bit too far to walk into town but taxis are available (some advance booking needed) if you want to have a few drinks with dinner in the evening. Francesco (who runs the place) made our stay, he helped us to plan our local sightseeing and gave us good restaurant recommendations; overall he was fantastically helpful and available without being overbearing. We're looking forward to going back some day.
