We have stayed with Shirley and Roy at their beautiful guest house high in the hills of Tuscany on two occasions and can not recommend it highly enough. Fantastic location away from it all. A windy drive up, or an enjoyable hour of leg stretching from the pretty town of Bagni Di Lucca, the lovely tiny village of Gombereto is a delight. The house is even nicer and the welcome warm and relaxed. We loved it.
This is also a great location for trips in a car. To Montefagetesi (great views) and Barga (both nearby) with Lerici (coast) and Carrara (for a full day out). The town of Lucca is also a must.

Karel and I travelled Tuscany and Umbria for 3 weeks in September and the time spent at Casa Marchi in Gombereto was the jewel in the crown. Off the beaten track, this hamlet is perched in the all too beautful Alpi Apuane and just the way we had imagined. But it was better - the hospitality, the dinner and long chats and laughter with Roy and Shirley, brought this little corner of Italy to life. Dinner was superb, breakfast a feast for the eyes, walks along the mule paths and little back loops were "special" experiences and our hosts score 10! Miss this place and you have missed out.

My husband and I recently spent 3 weeks traveling around Italy, and 4 of these nights were spent at Casa Marchi. After the hustle and bustle of Rome and Naples, it finally felt as if we had arrived home. Roy and Shirley are wonderful hosts and their guesthouse is warm and welcoming. Our days started with a breakfast fit for a king, after which we ventured around the surrounding countryside to find untouched gems and the most exquisite views. It was also very easy to reach other places of interest that we had earmarked on our itinerary, e.g. the walled-city of Lucca and the Ferrari museum in Maranello. Our evenings were spent dining on fantastic food and filled with good conversation (often past midnight :-). We'll definitely be back!!

A fantastic place to stay if one wants to get away from the thousands of tourists in Italy. Nestled in a wonderful village, up in the mountains surrounding Bagni di Lucca, Casa Marchi really is a gem! Roy and Shirley are great hosts and make you feel right at home. Food and service was nothing but first class! If you are lucky enough to be around for the local pizza evening then you are in for a real treat. Real Italian pizza at its best, in large quantities :-)
