We booked our holiday through Thomson/Crystal two days before we flew out - having never been on a package holiday before we had no idea what to expect, but the Hotel Adamello surpassed any and all expectations. Warm, cosy, clean and welcoming, with exceptional staff, delicious food (buffet-style breakfasts and four-course meals every evening) and a superb location. The managers were always around to make sure all was well, and every single member of staff gave their all to make sure that everyone was happy and comfortable.
Food, as previously mentioned, was excellent - dinners mainly simple but obviously home-cooked affairs with local specialities often included. The middle of the stay saw a "Gala dinner" which, again, we were very impressed by - five courses of local dishes (including venison salami, a delicious beetroot risotto and the signature dish - the surprise of which I shan't spoil: suffice to say we were surprised and delighted).
Our room was on the 3rd floor below street-level, overlooking the mountains. It was spotlessly clean, very comfortable and contained everything needed for a nice stay in the Alps aside from a kettle/tea-making facilities. Having said that, the staff were perfectly happy for us to take a pot of tea down from the bar whenever we wanted it. Views from the balcony were stunning. The only negative point was that the pipework in one corner of the room could be quite noisy at certain times of the morning and evening, but we quickly phased it out, and I have rarely slept so well in a hotel bed.
Overall, I have genuinely never felt as welcomed to a hotel anywhere in the world. The owners and staff went the extra mile in every possible sense, and I was extremely sorry to leave at the end of our stay.
As for the skiing itself, Passo Tonale is a small village and quite a small resort. The blues are good for beginners but are mostly "straight up and down" the mountainside, with little travelling - no gently cruising through alpine forests or the like. Blue 18 and blue 34 do provide lovely scenic gentle runs however, and there was certainly more than enough to keep us occupied for the week. Queueing discipline at the lifts was not great - pretty much a free-for-all. My partner was a first-time skier, and her biggest complaint was the attitude of the ski--school tutors and lift-attendants. They were often impatient and intolerant of new skiers, and she has sustained a pair of strained knee ligaments following a fall at the top of a chair lift after which the lift attendant refused to stop the lift and instead tried to bodily lift her out of the way. Having said this, none of it has put us off skiing, and we would potentially head back to Passo Tonale in the future.
If and when we do return to the village, we will definitely be staying at the Adamello. Would recommend it without question!
