We stayed at the Hotel Mon Repos Hermitage for 6 nights in September, having found the hotel on this site and booked Ryanair flights from East Midlands to Alghero. We stayed overnight in Alghero and drove to Baia Sardinia late Monday afternoon.

I would reiterate mostly the views of others on this site (and found Rapier's descriptions very accurate) and recommend the hotel wholeheartedly.

We needed a quiet week with some sun to recharge our batteries and that is exactly what we got. Baia Sardinia is small, clean, but inclusive, so if you need more than sun, sand, sea and a pool, you will need a hire car to explore.

The hotel's main asset is it's position. It sits on a hillside and overlooks that fabulous bay so there are lots of opportunities to drink in the beautiful view. There are indeed (30 - I counted them) a number of steps going down to the piazza area which then leads to the sea front, but it takes a matter of minutes to walk down. There are steps leading up and down various areas in the hotel: the reception, car park, breakfast area, pool etc. so the Mon Repos may not be suitable for someone with walking difficulties or a buggy with a baby/toddler.

The room was spotless with plenty of storage space. Ensuite had a shower and wash basin with cupboards under and over (how many hotels have you been in where there is not even a hook for your wash bag?) We had a Comfort room (i.e. the cheapest) but it was spacious (there was a single bed as well as a double) and the bed was extremely comfortable. The room was at the back of the hotel overlooking the road but there was a planter with a trellis and climbing plant in front of the patio doors to shield against people looking straight into the room. I rather liked it. The balcony was large and there were a couple of plastic chairs and a table outside. The only improvement would be tea and coffee making facilities and better quality chairs with a cushion! Having said that, there is no shortage of comfortable chairs and sofas around the hotel to sit in. The bar as someone said, is lifeless. Another reviewer commented on the lack of bar around the pool but there is nothing to stop you buying coffee or a drink at the bar in the hotel and taking it outside. The grounds are neat as a pin and well tended. Lots of mosquitos about though.

The pool was quiet but with 20 sun loungers and over 50 rooms in the hotel, I wonder what it is like in August? As Rapier commented, the pool is closed for an hour and a half in the afternoon. I guess it is because the Italians take their siesta seriously and it is to give those who wish to do so, the chance to have a nap. The hotel was very popular with German tourists and they ignored the pool closure rule however!

Breakfasts in Italy are not brilliant but there was something for everyone at the Mon Repos and my husband enjoyed his salami and cheese and I enjoyed the water melon and yoghurt.

The staff were friendly although the female staff did not speak English very well. Fabrizio promised that we could have a room to shower and change in on our last day as we were spending the morning at the pool and then driving back to Alghero in the afternoon. However, the lady on reception said we had to use the pool shower which I was a bit grumpy about; we then had to repack our pool stuff in the garage where our suitcases were stored.

We found the designer shops on the sea front bizarre at first but realise having visited Porto Cervo that this is normal in the north of Sardinia! The beach is pristine and area around it is clean and well tended. You can book boat trips/pedaloesdiving trips on the beach. If you like walking, it's not the place to go as Baia Sardinia is so small.

We were worried about the cost of eating out but you can have fresh crab pasta at the restaurant on the beach for less than 15 euros. The lobster was lovely but astronomically priced. The hotel recommended the trattoria a couple of hundred metres down the hill and we ate there on 3 evenings. Even in September though, the restaurant was full by 8.30 p.m. so we booked a table in advance. A meal for two people, one main course with Sardinian bread, a bottle of wine and a bottle of water came to less than 50 euros. Small sweets and a glass of the local myrto came free.
I wanted to eat at an agritourismo and the hotel reception recommended and booked for us Tenuta Pilastru, about a twenty minute drive to the west of Arzachena. We had a four course meal of lovely local Sardinia dishes for less than 50 euros for two. Absolutely amazing value but starve yourself before you go as there was far too much food. It is very, very popular so you need to book as far in advance as you can.

I would definately go back to the Hotel Mon Repos. It was better than we had anticipated and good value for the price.

“Splendid hotel with great character”

My husband and I have just returned from Sardinia for the 2nd time this year. Alghero in March for a short break and recently to Baia sardinia for 1 week.
We flew to Alghero on both occassions, but hired a car for the journey to Baia on the 2nd trip. The costa Smeralda is stunning, words and photographs struggle to hit the mark. Also a car is essential to apprecciate whats on offer.
The hotel Mon Repos is, in our view, very chic but not prententous in a cold and modern trendy way that is all too popular now. It rather reminded me of an Agatha Christy, or Poirrot film.
All the staff were friendly and helpful, ( it would have been nice if the guests adopted the same attitude). Perfect location, super views of the bay, and yet very tranquil. Our room was only a standard, but yet was a good size and immaculate with a great sea view from our small but pretty balcony on the top floor. We paid 100 euro per night. Good value in my opinion.
Typical breakfast, no surprises, just fresh honest food.
The things we would do differently when we most definately return are, to go earlier in the season because it was far too quiet in the evenings, especially when it is not that warm to sit alfresco. A shorter stay in one place and move about the coast and drink wine instead of Gin and Tonic at 8 euros a time.
The restaurants were very nice but after 6 nights they became very repetative and everyone went to bed early. The bar in the hotel was beautiful but lifeless.
All in all, well worth a visit.

“Great time at the Mon Repos”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2007

We stayed for 5 days at the Mon Repos in September this year. We splashed out and stayed in a suite which had a great private balcony overlooking the bay - it felt like the best room the Hotel had. There was also a big bathroom and a separate lounge. This was not cheap - 290 euros a night - but given the quality of the accommodation it didn't feel like we were being ripped off either.

Breakfast was great - coffee, fresh fruit, eggs, sausages, pastries, various juices, bread etc.

The pool is small but adequate and quite quiet due to the proximity of the sea I would guess.

The staff were all great - very friendly and gracious.

There isn't a lot of choice to eat out, which is a shame. About 5 different places in the resort centre. Great pizzas and some nice fish, but not much else. One of the local wines Sella & Mosca Cannonau is a great drink to have with dinner.

Definitely need a car - we drove over having spent 3 nights in Alghero and used the car to visit Porto Cervo as well. Also recommend a boat trip to the Madalena archipelago - they are several companies with huts on the road behind the beach that offer this trip on a daily basis.

“A very nice and friendly hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 July 2007

We stayed at this hotel for one week in July 2007. We found the hotel on TripAdvisor and booked directly with the hotel, then separately booked EasyJet flights from Gatwick to Olbia. The hotel arranged transfers from Olbia (at 60 Euros each way).

Note that we are a couple of fairly fit 40-something year-olds so any references in the review such as 'easy walking' need to be interpreted accordingly.

The hotel is situated within the village/town of Baia Sardinia, set half-way up the hill from the sea at one side of the bay. It doesn't have its own beach - for swimming you have to use the public beach, which is a little limited and can be quite crowded, or the hotel's own pool. Getting to the beach and the centre of the village is a 200-300 yards walk down a series of steps (I'd guess about 30 steps, which could possibly be a problem for less agile residents) then onto the very nice brick-paved promenade leading down to the sea. There are a number of restaurants within easy walking distance, varying in quality (see more below).

The initial approach to the hotel from the road is to walk down the hill, either using steps or a very steep ramp. First impressions of the frontage and public areas are extremely favourable - nice architecture and design, and all spotlessly clean and well maintained. This proved to be true generally for the hotel, so it is a very nice hotel.

Staff were uniformly very friendly and helpful, and most of the reception staff spoke English to some extent. Note that as a general rule we found that not many Sardinians speak English, so come prepared with a phrasebook or some inventive hand-signs!

We had a superior sea-view room. The room was clean, modern and well-sized with plenty of storage space, although my partner and I differed in opinion on the decor, which was a mixture of white and sage-green wash (even the furniture). The en suite was clean and modern and had a good shower, but no bath. We didn't really see any other types of room, but the fire evacuation plan on our room door did suggest that despite being 'superior' our room was by no means one of the largest. Our room also had a balcony, but we didn't use it much because there was no real divider from the balconies of adjacent rooms, so little privacy.

The (outdoor) pool was quite nice, clean and well-maintained, although as stated in other reviews there isn't any bar or snack service. Also, for some reason the pool is closed from 12.30pm to about 3pm every day. During our stay it tended to be very quiet around the pool, which isn't necessarily a bad thing!

Breakfast was fine. Not exceptional, but certainly nothing to complain about. And a nice breakfast room and terrace to eat it on.

For the evening meals we booked half-board in advance, as we were concerned about how much a meal in town might cost. This was a mistake. The evening meal is provided at a separate restaurant adjacent to the hotel, which seems to be financially independent of the hotel. The food quality was OK, but the main complaint was that the 26 Euro pppn cost delivered a very simple and small-portioned meal, as the restaurant clearly sought to make its normal profit and squeeze a four-course meal out of the remainder. And of course you had to pay extra for drinks (lowest price for a reasonable bottle of wine was about 20 Euros). After two days we cancelled the half-board and then ate out - the best decision we made all week. The best restaurant we found within easy walking distance was 'Il Guscios' - far better and more interesting food, more of it and actually cheaper overall than the half-board (although we did only have three courses). Note that the 'La Rocca' restaurant mentioned in another review is definitely not within walking distance. The typical total cost per night for a good meal at Il Guscios was about 60 Euros for two people, including a decent bottle of wine and a 10% tip.

Baia Sardinia itself is pretty but fairly limited, and no other interesting places are within reasonable walking distance, especially if it's hot. So unless your idea of a perfect holiday is to lie in the sun all day every day then we would strongly recommend hiring a car to see some of the other villages/towns in the region and try out other beaches. We didn't initially, but changed our mind and took one for the last two days of our stay. We used the hotel's hire service at 68 Euros per day for a small car with air-conditioning, which was reasonably priced compared to other rates available in the resort, but I daresay you could get a better deal booking ahead, especially for a whole week.

“Excellent Central Hotel 4***”

Recently returned from a wonderful week in the Mon Repos.
Hotel highly recommended we had large room and balcony for 110 euro B and B per night.
Spotless clean and lovely gardens, staff very friendly and helpful.
Restaurant does not belong to hotel, we ate there for half board a couple nights at 26 euro per person each however you can get much better meals in the town for more reaonable cost.
Hotel very central to bars, restaurants and beach.
Also close to Costa Smeralda for great day trips.

Highly recommend.
