“Sweet Roots”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 August 2010

"Sweet Roots" (Glyco-risa) is a very apt name for this lovely hotel. We originally booked for one week but extended to two almost as soon as we got there.

Owned by the Karagianis family, it's set in a beautiful sandy bay overlooking the Dodecanese islands, the Turkish coast and the "wine dark" Aegean sea. The hotel is above the bay and down by the beach the family have built a very stylish beach restaurant and pool. The menu is excellent and the service, provided by "Admiral" Themistocles and the team, is very good.

Very safe for children, the hotel seems popular with Greek, German and Scandinavian tourists. It's only a 5 euro taxi ride into the pretty town of Pythagorio, which has lots of restaurants and bars along the quay (but gets busy in August). We had a great holiday and wouldn't hesitate in recommending it. If you want a romantic evening, our top tip would be to book a table down by the water for dinner and try a bottle of the Samos Red!

“Wonderful hotel worth the money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 July 2010

Glicorisa beach hotel is absolutely beautiful located with a breathtaking view of the bay, turkish coastline and the Mediterranian sea. The room was of ordinary size, clean and with wonderful seaview. Including fridge (free), air con (free) and safetybox (1 euro/day). The bathroom was clean, great plus for the shower curtain. New towels and cleaning every day, new linen every 3 day.

All the staff was very welcoming and really seemed to care about their guests comfort and well-being. If you for example needed an earlier breakfast someday due to excursions (regular hours between 8-10) just tell the reception 1 day in advance. Buffé style in breakfast, variety okej.
The beach was beautiful, clean and rewarded with "Blue flagg". Equipped with sunbeds, umbrellas - safetybox, ashtray, small menu and a button attached to the pole! Just press it and the beach staff will scurry to take your order. Sunbeds 7 euro/day - includes 2 small bottles of cold water as well.

At the beach taverna a few meters away you could take a break - enjoying just a cold drink or a long tasty lunch.Even here the staff was very attentive and waited on your order very swiftly. Shower and changing booth at the beach, toilet by the pool.
We didn't have half board but the buffé seemed to show a wide diversity of courses, served at the beach restaurant. You can not change dinner for lunch. If you wished to eat there and didn't had it pre-paid it was 10 euro/person.

There are no minimarkets at all in the vicinity - plan your purchases ahead in Pythagorio. The hotel minibus will take you there for free 4 times a day: 9.30, 12.25, 20.15 & 21.35. Back: 12.30, 20.20 & 21.40. We found the times mismatching with ours - taxi is preferable, just ask the reception to make a call. 7 euro to town & 5 euro back - fixed prices and no meter.
On leaving day you can borrow towels for the beach (won't have to pack your wet towels) and shower and freshen up later in the basement if you have a late flight.
No mosquitos and the nights were pleasantly warm. Tap water perfectly okey to drink.

We had a wonderful stay at this hotel, thanks to the fantastic environment and the foresighted and friendly staff. All the small details really made the difference and no request seemed to be a problem.

“Great stay with excellent beach!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 July 2010

This is a great place with a great location. The service was excellent in many areas: hotel staff friendly and helpful, cleaning staff prompt, restaurant and beach staff quick and patient to help us while practicing a few sentences in the greek language.

The room was cozy with a terrace that gives a spectacular view of the seemingly private cove overlooking Turkey. It is also very very clean. Thank goodness for the AC as we stayed in July and Samos can get hot. The beach and water are steps away from the hotel which is extremely convenient. The water is cool, refreshing and wonderful for swimming. I don't think there is a better place in Samos for swimming with a wonderful beach than this. The beach offers so many areas to rest on: sand, grass, rock, under an umbrella, tree, hut, bar or lounge area.

The food and drinks were great, especially enjoyed the 'Glicorisa Punch' and 'Frappe' and daily food specials. During the day, the beach is very popular and crowded with both hotel guests and visitors which means you may have to wait a bit longer for your drink or a "prized" front row umbrella hut but the staff made up for it; they ran in the heat and stayed on top of things. As the sun began to go down, everyone seemed to leave and we enjoyed a quiet beach which felt like ours alone every evening.

Other nights we stayed by the beach bar, played pool for 1 Euro then took the free shuttle the hotel offers to the nearby (5 minutes) to the Town of Pithagorio to enjoy people watching, shopping and a cocktail. A 5 euro taxi ride took us back to the hotel on late nights.

Every morning we enjoyed a tasty breakfast buffet and enjoyed the view. This place is great. It is family friendly which is nice to see (playground, kiddie pool) and especially nice that this area is separated from everything else so that couples can still feel that romantic feeling.

Again, great location and stay with very nice owners!

Ah, a must see if you are visiting the island: Karlovassi, Kokari, Vathi, Pithagorio, the cave & tunnel in Pithagoria (so much history!)

“The proof that a grand location is not all it takes...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 August 2008

As it was not the first time me and my husband were visiting Samos, a greek island we are particularly fond of, we already knew where we would want to stay. That was Glicorisa Beach Hotel. We had not stayed there before but knew it was indeed a wonderful hotel set at one of the most beutiful beaches of Samos. The hotel is situated at an almost private bay, with magnificent view, sunbeds and umbrellas at the beach with waiters taking your every order at relatively reasonable prices. Everything down at the beach looked like a 5-star hotel, indeed. However, back at the hotel, which of course, to be fair I have to say was very clean (new towels every day etc), the management was, at least, provocative, unwilling to help and r u d e. To our complaint that the airconditioning system did not work properly (our room was at third and top floor - the lift I must say did not work- and we stayed during the hottest days of the greek summer) they responded practically that it could not be so (!) since no-one else had complained (when indeed we knew for a fact that there had been other complaints as well). As if that were not enough we noticed that at breakfast, they did not cover the ham and cheese and as a result the bees and other insects had a really good time walking all over the edibles!!!!!!! To this our complaint, the manager's wife (family run business, with apparently not a clue of what it takes to be proffessional) said "Well what do you expect from a 3-star hotel" and "That's what you get with the price you are paying for the room"!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I certainly do not expect to be sweating in my hotel room like on a safari in Africa and most certainly not to view an insect's party all over my breakfast. Of course the manager apologised and offered to give us another room (in which the aircondition did work just fine) and next morning everything at the breakfast buffet was properly covered but the damage was done. And you think that the least they could do to smooth things over was to charge less for the room with no clima, or to offer us a free dinner at the hotel restaurant or some other gesture like that that would show us that they were really sorry for the way they treated us, or that they wished that we did not leave with bad feelings but no, nothing. We will never again stay at a hotel with such appalling management.

  • Liked — The beach and the service down at the beach (sunbeds/umbrellas, waiters, prices)
  • Disliked — The management (rude, unprofessional, unwilling to assist)

“Fantastic Glicorisa”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 August 2008

Fantastic hotel which is set in a breathtaking bay with its own sandy beach and swimming pool area. Family owned and run to a 5 star standard. The rooms, restaurant, gardens and facilities are very well maintained and spotlessly clean. The friendly staff are exceptional and provide drinks, snacks and meals during the day ( waiter/ress service to your sunbed) and an excellent daytime and evening restaurant service - with live entertainment some evenings. If you are going to Samos - you must stay at the Glicorisa and experience the fantastic service and the hospitality of the owners. We will certainly be going back.
