We booked these studios via Thomson Holidays in the UK in late August 2011. We were extremely disappointed with this accommodation. Anybody planning to stay here should bear the following in mind before booking.
Nikos Studio are situated at the top of a very steep hill; approximately one kilometre above the town of Lassi. A car or other transport (a donkey would be fine) is essential. We lost count of the times we saw people stopping to gasp whilst attempting the ascent. How people managed to carry shopping and other items up this incline in 30+ degrees of heat is a mystery to me.
Crucially, the images depicted on the Thomson website bear no similarity to the room we were allocated at this accommodation. There are two studios in this part of the building (#13 & #14). My impression was that these rooms had been converted from utility areas into guest accommodation.
The so-called ‘studio’ we were allocated was grubby, cramped and dark. Our room (#14) was situated at the side of the building and overlooked a piece of wasteland. It consisted of a single, small bed area, a shower and toilet and a space behind the door with a cooker and fridge. They had managed to squeeze in a ¾ size bed, but this left little room at either side of the bed area. We could barely fit ourselves and two suitcases into this tiny space. What is referred to as a kitchenette is a tiny area behind the entrance door consisting of an elderly two-ring cooker, a sink, cupboard and fridge. There is an air-conditioning unit on the wall but it was dirty and falling to pieces. I suspect that room #13 is of similar quality.
The bathroom was dark with ageing fixtures and fittings. It had no natural light or ventilation other than a gap at the top of the rear wall.
We have been travelling to Greece for over thirty years as independent travellers and with many tour operators-including Thomson. We realise that standards of accommodation in Greece can vary and, often, studios are basic and simply furnished. However, this is the worst accommodation we have ever been offered by a tour operator. We were particularly shocked because Thomson usually offer accommodation of a much higher standard. The room reminded me of the cheap ‘village rooms’ advertised by low-cost tour operators in the 70’s and 80’s. I beleive that Thomson significantly misrepresented the quality of this accomodation in their advertising.
Our Thomson rep was unable (or unwilling) to help and so we stayed for one night only. We found far superior accommodation (at our own expense) in the Marina 11 apartments at the foot of the hill.
Lassi is a great resort and a good base to explore the beautiful island of Cephalonia. However, if you must stay at Nikos, my advice is to ensure that you secure a room on an upper floor, facing the front of the building. We were not given any option for a room aspect when booking on line.
