“Le Prieure provided us and our families with moments and memories we will cherish for a lifetime”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 September 2010

We hired Le Prieure for exclusive use over three days to celebrate our Civil Partnership and my 50th Birthday Party. 120 of our friends and family members flew in from all around the world to participate in the celebrations. The Prieure and its entire team put on an amazing show which even attracted very high praise from the most seasoned and difficult travellers amongst our guests. Due to capacity constraints, half of our guests stayed at Le Prieure whilst the rest slept in other hotels across the area. Our guests were lavishly looked after with an army of staff constantly on duty. Nothing was too much to ask and there was a solution to every problem. From the General Manager down to the chambermaids, everyone was on duty almost for 24 hours a day during 3 days and it made for an unforgettable experience. The main events were held on the Saturday where Le Prieure served a truly world class, gastronomic feast for lunch over 5 dishes and this for 120 people in one seating. The room had been tastefully decorated and laid out. The service, the execution, the presentation and quality of the dishes were of the same standard if not higher than any gourmet restaurant in Paris serving 4 guests. Before the lunch, we had an amazing cocktail party during which superb local sparkling wines and tentalizing canappes were served on the terraces of the chateau as weather allowed it. The highlight of the lunch was the arrival of the wedding cake or piece montee made of thousands of choux buns in the shape of a medieval castle. It blew away many of our guests and the cameras were flashing for a long time as if it was an Oscar ceremony ! After a 3 hours break, some of the male members of the party joined the Head Sommelier and the two of us for an exclusive wine tasting event taking place in the hotel XIth century caveau before rejoining the rest of the party for a magnificent dinner dance served in the transformed dining room with dance floor. The Chef (Benoit, a young talent to keep an eye on as he is certainly facing a promising future) put on a buffet extravangaza spread out over 20 meters and he surprised our guests with an abundance of seafood, local dishes and specialities all accompanied with another incredible selection of fine local wines. My birthday cake was actually five spectacular cakes, one more delicious than the other. We partied until 3'Oclock in the morning. The event came to an end with a farewell brunch served on the Sunday morning during which more delicacies and regular brunch fare were offered in addition to superb oysters, more sparking wine exquisite pastries. " months later we continue to receive thanks from our guests who are still under the spell of the Le Prieure's atmosphere, the lavishness of the treatment they received but more importantly, the amazing quality of everything they ate, drank or enjoyed during their stay.

I could not recommend this hotel enough. This is traditional, "old money" French hotellerie where understated elegance and efficient service are being given priority over air conditionning, IPod station and other gimmicks that upscale hotels tend to spend money on forgetting very often high standards of food and service. Together with Le Prieure events management team, we spent one year planning this event, and it turned out not only as planned but even better than planned. Our warmest thanks and deep appreciation go to all involved. We shall return with great pleasure

“Great Location and the restaurant is pretty good, but take out a bank loan”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 July 2010

I have not stayed in the hotel but I have been to the restaurant twice and can comment on the hotel's restaurant, the facilities and the location. The restaurant has an interesting menu but it can cost an awful lot depending on when you choose to dine. The lunch time menu is reasonable and is on a par with other notable restaurants of the region, but it is still rather pretentious. If you are a fan of silver service and the 'old fashioned' way of how one goes about dining then it will be right up your street. However, I always pity the poor young waiters who are getting to grips with picking things up with a fork and spoon in one hand, serving from the correct side and removing from the other etc.
The food is not as good as that I have experienced in some favourite restaurants, nearby. It is beautifully presented but I would not rush back. Pretentious.
Looking at the cost of the rooms, in the lobby, it does seem slightly pricey but it is a lovely location. It is well maintained and is a beautiful place, but be willing to pay through the nose. Sitting on the terrace, looking down over the Loire is wonderful but I would leave it for a special occasion.

“Overpriced and standards have slipped”

We stayed in room #1. Nice room but incredibly noisy whenever guests above us walked around. They were active until after 1am and up again at 6am so we did not sleep much. Unacceptable for about 300 euro per night. Restaurant was very disappointing for 100 euro per head. You could do far better for the money. 10 years ago this was a much better establishment. Our in person and written feedback were both ignored. Total disappointment. Too bad as the location is good.

“Not what it is cracked up to be.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 August 2009

We went to this hotel to spend a few days for a 60th birthday party. The hotel is situated in a very pretty area overlooking the Loire River and it has very beautiful gardens and leisure area. The staff seemed very disinterested in us and were of no help in sourcing local attractions or informing us what was nice to see. As for breakfast, it was a disaster, situated in a small room off the main dining room with no windows, unless you told them you wanted and express breakfast, the cost was 24 euros for nothing more than a continental breakfast. An express breakfast included a glass of orange juice, cup of coffee and 2 pastries for 9 euros. we went into Saumur after the first morning and got a much better breakfast for 6 euros. The restaurant wwas poor on the 1st night, but we did get a much improved meal 2 nights later.

“Beautiful grounds, excellent food.”

We were booked into Le Prieure as part of a cycling tour group in the Loire Valley. The hotel has lovely grounds with nice views over the river.

My husband and I were given a room in the Les Residences instead of in the main house. The room was OK, but lacked the grandeur and character of rooms in the house itself. They were more "country cottage" and less chateau.

Our group met for drinks on the terrace outside the restaurant, which provided beautiful views over the river. The meal we had was fantastic, several courses, all beautifully presented and very tasty. Breakfast the next morning was also very nice.

We also walked around the grounds, which had some magnificent woods and nice outlooks.

Staff seemed courteous and professional.

I would like to give this place another try, making sure we are booked into the main house next time.
