“what a laugh”

went to the hotel orphee in croatia with friends
the hotel was good, view not very good large tree infront of balcony, but lets face it did not go to stay in my room so no problem
Food basic but okay, rather a free for all at breakfast but fun though.
pool was good one of those that look like you drop off the edge, cant think of the name
surroundings very damaged during the war but had some great days out to Cavtat and dubrovnik via the water taxis and they had some characters on them and we were offered local brew, that blew your head off
weather great 1 evening of terrible storm next day clear.
Would go to DubrovniK again it was magical and what a view from the sea
. All the shops seemed to sell the same stuff, so didnt buy much which is a good thing I suppose,
.
Been to Croatia before and will go again in the next dew years

“A quiet, friendly resort but for us it just wasn’t the authentic Croatian experience or quality we were hoping”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 October 2010

Croatia is a beautiful place and we enjoyed taking in the culture, sampling the food and marvelling at the scenery. Dubrovnik was stunning, although starting to increase more with tourism and thus prices are increasing it is certainly not worth leaving Croatia until you have been here. Also worth visiting are, Cavtat and the wonderful Elafiti Islands [boats leave from the Dubrovnik port]
However we were disappointed with our stay at the Hotel Orphee and the hotel falls down in several key areas: Food, facilities and resort.
However starting positively the rooms were clean, modestly but pleasantly presented and have fantastic balconies. Ensure you are on the top level however and no further than room 13 otherwise you will either have a restricted view on the lower levels or a view of some trees. Luckily we had an amazing view where the sunset often became the feature of our photos taken and listening to the waves lapping at the shore, an evening highlight.
We went half-board and sadly the food really disappointed. As stated in previous reviews the half-board does not include drinks so watch for costly add-ons here. Breakfast was acceptable offering the usual continental options of tea, coffee, juice, fried breakfast and cold meats and breads. On the last night we did venture to the other resort restaurant [not included in the half-board stay] Here you can have fresh seafood and meat cooked over an open grill. I had fresh prawns, salad and fish pate. It was a wonderful, delicious meal which was affordable and coupled with stunning views across the water and even the view of dolphins jumping up over the sea, a real highlight of the trip.
The Plat resort has seen better days. Although we found the service was generally good and very helpful the resort could do with a bit of redecorating. Also, the on-resort local shop was very limited in choice of foods and drink and in their opening hours. If you have a car I would recommend travelling to the near-by [15-minutes] grocery store. Further, the Plat resort is very quiet and slightly secluded so if you are looking for any nightlife, this is not the place to stay. But it does have decent transport links with day-trips to Dubrovnik and the bus at the top of the road to Cavtat.
We had mixed weather when we went in May. It rained for the first two days and then went to clear sun after that. I would recommend visiting Croatia in late May to June to enjoy the hot weather without too many other tourists.
Overview Hotel Orphee is a quiet, friendly resort but for us it just wasn’t the authentic Croatian experience or quality we were hoping.

I did not know what to expect from the hotel Orphee after reading some of the rewievs, but my husband and I were pleasently surprised, the hotel complex is large and wonderful. The staff were friendly and helpful, very good atmosphere, excellent position, nice view, and the most important thing ; not too expensive !

“Nice Pool & Views out to sea- Shame about the rest”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 June 2010

Hotel Orphee, Plat, Croatia.
Location: on the sea front. Pebble beach short walk. Mostly rocky otherwise, however, wonderfull views to the sea, awfull views inland (bullet ridden wrecked buildings). Only 2 off complex resteraunts within waliking distance though both very good. Bottom of fairly steep hill. Car hire recommended. No supermarket within walking distance. On site mini market held very little with reduced opening hours. Remote/Quiet location. Cavtat 15Mins by Car. Dubrovnik 35 Mins by car. Bus from hotel reception daily to Dubrovnik. No. 10 Bus on main road serves Dubrovnik to Cavtat. Airport 15 Mins by car (no aircraft noise though). Montenegro 30 Mins by car and and easy border crossing.
Rooms: small, single beds, clean, some sea views, balcony, poor showers over extremley small bath. Plently of hot water (if you can get the shower head to stay put)
Food: we nicknamed the resteraunt "The Goulag" to reflect the style and ambience. Breakfast is OK but get in early if you want hot food. Only did the (half board) evening meal once - had a look each night though. Goulash every night with veggies for the most part. Not to my taste. No Croation recepies that I could tell. Be wary of the drink prices, £2:00 for a very small bottle of water, £2:50 for small beer in the hotel resteraunt. Several other "on site" resteraunts, The "Bistro" being the worst. Had grilled Squid with Greens and boiled potatoes all floating in greens juice! Pool snack bar passable but nothing special going on. Prices reasonable though.
Pool: Excellent with fantastic views out to sea. Rather cold though as it's sea water.
Service: The locals try hard and allthough the service is slow it is well intentioned.
Cleanliness: Generaly very good.

Having had a good look round I dont believe this hotel is reflective of accomadation in Croatia. Just unlucky I suppose.

Rated 3 star by Palmair/Bath travel. I would give it 2 stars.
See pictures for more.

Croatia:
Very high standard of food in Croatia. Seafood very good in resteraunts. Pizzerias fantastic. Dubrovnik is stunning. Cavtat is beautifull. Average meal price or two including drinks £30 - £40. Average beer £2:00.
Very welcoming people. Will return.

Please remember: Different people = Different tastes; This is my opinion.

“Please don't Bother!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2010

This reveiw has taken a while as I've tried to forget we even visited this awful hotel. I've never left a review before so here goes.
My husband and I visited in August 2008, it was to be our honeymoon and as we were on a tight budget we thought 3 stars would be a decent hotel. We were wrong.
The staff were abrupt- at first we thought this was just the Croatian way- it's not. The room was at least clean and did have a nice view. Tiny bathroom with mould. Food is horrendous- we ate in the hotel only once and even then got repremanded by a matronly waitress as I hadn't taken a saucer for my coffee cup. God forbid I leave a coffee mark on the plastic picnic table! Average age of hotel guests- 80.
We hired a car so could get around- don't take the hotel excursions they cost a fortune and you can do them yourself and join a touring group for much less cost. On one outing we met a Belgian couple and we were discussing our sccommodation- they too had chosen a 3 star hotel in Dubrovnik and we ecided to take a day triptogether to Bosnia- when we went to collect them their hotel staff served us tea and coffee in the beautiful hotel lounge complementary whilst we waited- it was then we knew we'd made a big mistake- The Hotel Orphee is a 1 star hotel if that.
I wouldn't even recommend this place to back packers as camping outside would be preferrable.
We've saved for 2 years since this awful experience and will be going to 5star hotel in Cyorus this year.
DON'T GO!!
(ps: Dubrovnik is a wonderful, beautiful city and I would love to go back some day - I'd just stay somewhere well away from Orphee!)
