“A quiet, friendly resort but for us it just wasn’t the authentic Croatian experience or quality we were hoping”
Croatia is a beautiful place and we enjoyed taking in the culture, sampling the food and marvelling at the scenery. Dubrovnik was stunning, although starting to increase more with tourism and thus prices are increasing it is certainly not worth leaving Croatia until you have been here. Also worth visiting are, Cavtat and the wonderful Elafiti Islands [boats leave from the Dubrovnik port]
However we were disappointed with our stay at the Hotel Orphee and the hotel falls down in several key areas: Food, facilities and resort.
However starting positively the rooms were clean, modestly but pleasantly presented and have fantastic balconies. Ensure you are on the top level however and no further than room 13 otherwise you will either have a restricted view on the lower levels or a view of some trees. Luckily we had an amazing view where the sunset often became the feature of our photos taken and listening to the waves lapping at the shore, an evening highlight.
We went half-board and sadly the food really disappointed. As stated in previous reviews the half-board does not include drinks so watch for costly add-ons here. Breakfast was acceptable offering the usual continental options of tea, coffee, juice, fried breakfast and cold meats and breads. On the last night we did venture to the other resort restaurant [not included in the half-board stay] Here you can have fresh seafood and meat cooked over an open grill. I had fresh prawns, salad and fish pate. It was a wonderful, delicious meal which was affordable and coupled with stunning views across the water and even the view of dolphins jumping up over the sea, a real highlight of the trip.
The Plat resort has seen better days. Although we found the service was generally good and very helpful the resort could do with a bit of redecorating. Also, the on-resort local shop was very limited in choice of foods and drink and in their opening hours. If you have a car I would recommend travelling to the near-by [15-minutes] grocery store. Further, the Plat resort is very quiet and slightly secluded so if you are looking for any nightlife, this is not the place to stay. But it does have decent transport links with day-trips to Dubrovnik and the bus at the top of the road to Cavtat.
We had mixed weather when we went in May. It rained for the first two days and then went to clear sun after that. I would recommend visiting Croatia in late May to June to enjoy the hot weather without too many other tourists.
Overview Hotel Orphee is a quiet, friendly resort but for us it just wasn’t the authentic Croatian experience or quality we were hoping.
