“A bargain at a good location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

This hostel is a 3-5 minute walk from most restaurants and the supermarket in Santa Elena, and it provides a nice view over a small valley from the back porch. Our room was clean and well maintained, and the bathroom had new tile, a hot water shower, but no hot water in the sink. The hostess spoke english, provided a decent free breakfast every morning, and set up tours for us.
The only problems we had were that the bed wasn't very comfortable, and the kitchen is closed from 9pm to 6:30am. So if you're starting early in the morning or coming back late you can't cook, and you don't have many options for getting food in town either.
Considering it was only $25/night this is a hostel I would recommend and probably return to, but there a few other places just across the street (such as Cabina's Eddy) worth looking into as well.

“Maybe not for the private room”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

I stayed at private room #7 for $15 a night. It is good for the price, however, I had to sleep with a face mask to avoid the smell of mold in the room. The room #7 I stayed in was stuffy, it had a lot of privacy, but the room just smells aweful. I had to open the window and the window next to the door to ventilate out the smell. And the problem is that the room is also next to the shared bathroom, so you hear people opening door and shutting door in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. Another thing is, some machine is running in the middle of the night, so I hear loud squeaking sound in the middle of the night twice. I slept with the earplug on, but this was just so loud that I can hear it with my earplug on.

The bathroom in this private room was fine, but the toilet seat seem like it had alot of 'use', it looks dirty but it is probably not dirty. I would not sit down on the seat for sure. Hot shower is fine and with lots of pressure.

I like the breakfast and the staff. Ronny the owner and the family is very friendly and helpful. I just wish they could clean up the hostel abit more. There are quite abit of junks or just random objects around the property.

“Going the extra mile”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

The service was excellent. I started out on my trip back to San Jose. About 14 kilometers down the steep and unpaved road I got stuck. We returned to Sleepers Hostel, or rather, Ronny, the owner, drove down no less then three times... first to pick me up and my family as well, later to get a mechanic down to where the car was, and finally yet another trip to bring the mechanic back with a part. Long story short, Ronny went the extra mile(s) for us. I am grateful and I am sure that elsewhere this would have cost an enormous amount of money. Ronny did it simply to be helpful. These folks will go the extra mile for you as well. We highly recommend Sleepers Sleep Cheaper to you when you visit La Fortuna and Monteverde.

“Was good for a quick trip”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2012

My boyfriend and I stayed here for one quick night to do some ziplining and hiking, not intended to be anything romantic, and were actually assuming we wouldn't have much privacy. We ended up having a private room and bathroom with a great view of the valley. The only complaint we had was that the bed was uncomfortable, shaped like a bowl, and we both were sunk down in the middle of it, haha. But we're young and our backs can handle it. Plus, we only paid $25 for the room so it was fine. The breakfast in the morning was great and the owner was helpful for the most part. We think he was having a bad day because he was a little short with me when I asked him some questions when we first got there, but overall he was very kind. It's not a 5-star hotel, but for a hostel, this is a really great experience.

Room Tip: Our room was straight ahead when you walk in the door, with a big window facing the valley. It has o...

“Great price and great hosts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

I stayed in the four-bed dorm. My bed was comfortable and the place was kept very clean. Hot water and good water pressure in the showers was also great. The highlight was the help that the family who owns the place offered me in recommending the best tours and booking them for me. They went out of their way to improve my Monteverde/Santa Elena experience. One of my top hostels in my Costa Rica travels.
