“It's all about the little details”

The moment we walked through the door, the staff of Casa Tranquilo made us feel like friends. A truly welcoming atmosphere, and not that fake 'have a nice day' nonsense: these guys are the real thing. On the nights we stayed, high winds rocked the building, which added to the enchanting atmosphere of the cosy alpine chalet-style rooms, with their comfy bunks and hot, hot showers (a real plus up here in the relative chill of the mountains). Their well-equipped kitchen and proximity to a large supermarket meant that we saved a good deal of money on food while we stayed here and were able to prepare good meals for our trips to the national parks. And they do you breakfast! And free coffee and tea! And free wi-fi/internet! And good advice on travel and all for ten dollars a night (may alter depending on the room you choose). This is the best deal in Santa Elena: a properly welcoming place with a heart. Clean, cosy and secure. Get a double room if you can, they're really nice.

Room Tip: Get a double room if you can, they're really nice.

“Very friendly, helpful, and comfortable living space!”

As far as hostels go, this one is hard to beat. Having stayed at various other hostels throughout Costa Rica, Casa Tranquilo was by far my favorite. When you’re traveling on a budget in country you’re not familiar with, you hope to find clean and comfortable accommodations with helpful and friendly staff, and Casa Tranquilo satisfied all of these needs.

The treehouse/cabin design of the hostel, with its large windows and skylights upstairs, gives the place a fun, open, and relaxing atmosphere. They provide kitchen access with free breakfast (plus delicious homemade banana bread), hot showers, decent-sized rooms (some are a bit drafty, but easily remedied with a towel/jacket placed over the windows), clean sheets and towels, laundry service, AND internet access! This alone would have made it a good hostel, but what made it a great experience as well was how helpful and friendly the staff were (Johnny, David, and Elvis). They helped us book tours and even gave my friend and I suggestions on how to travel to Playa Grande, and later into Nicaragua, safely and efficiently.

Casa Tranquilo definitely goes above and beyond to make sure you have both an enjoyable and memorable experience. I hope to come back to Costa Rica one day and Casa Tranquilo will definitely be on my “Places to Stay” list!

We ended up staying here for two nights rather than one. This is a great spot if your looking for a histal in monteverde. The free breakfast includes fresh local fruit, eggs, granola, local milk and coffee. We slept great here! With the winds raging outside it allmost felt like a treehouse. Waking up to a beautiful view on the mountains and our own porch to sit on. Traveling in group of four we had our own room at the cheapest rate. One of the owners, Elvis, showed us around a bit, gave us great advice of places to visit-including an awesome organic coffee tour, la bella tica, and played cards with us at night. I would reccomend this place to everyone, a lone travelor or a family! The greatest hospitality oh how could I have forgotten- fresh homemade banana bread every single morning for breakfast, that one of their employees bakes! You will not be disapointed!

“Noisy, but excellent staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

I stayed at Casa Tranquilo for 3 nights at $10 a night. As soon as we arrived, Elvis, who is not the owner, but works there, offered us fruit and banana bread then took us on a free hike to a gorgeous fig tree. He was a wealth of info about the area and led me on three other free hikes, one to see the sunset over the Gulf of Nicoya. Breakfast was really good: cook it yourself but there were eggs, fruit, toast...and all left available during the day for snacking. And the owner, David baked amazing banana bread everyday! One negative: We were in a private room over the street and the nights were quite noisy. There are many dogs in town and there was a lot of barking going on.

“Great service at Casa Tranquilo”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

Stayed here for two nights. Very reasonable price and the staff - especially Elvis - was very helpful. They can recommend good places to eat for an authentic experience and they have connections on the Pacific coast if you are looking for a good place to stay. The shower was very hot, but the rooms are drafty. There was a lot of wildlife in my room, but that's Costa Rica. The room was clean enough for the price, though a little drafty. I would stay here again for sure.
