The moment we walked through the door, the staff of Casa Tranquilo made us feel like friends. A truly welcoming atmosphere, and not that fake 'have a nice day' nonsense: these guys are the real thing. On the nights we stayed, high winds rocked the building, which added to the enchanting atmosphere of the cosy alpine chalet-style rooms, with their comfy bunks and hot, hot showers (a real plus up here in the relative chill of the mountains). Their well-equipped kitchen and proximity to a large supermarket meant that we saved a good deal of money on food while we stayed here and were able to prepare good meals for our trips to the national parks. And they do you breakfast! And free coffee and tea! And free wi-fi/internet! And good advice on travel and all for ten dollars a night (may alter depending on the room you choose). This is the best deal in Santa Elena: a properly welcoming place with a heart. Clean, cosy and secure. Get a double room if you can, they're really nice.
