I've been a regular visitor to Unawatuna Beach Resort since the '90s. I've seen it go through ups and downs, and it is definitely on an up!
The hotel is simply beautiful. You get views of ocean sunsets from every room, you can have one of the delicious local cocktails while running your toes through pure white sand. The rooms are clean, have relaxing decor, are well equipped, and there's little that beats an evening soak in the jacuzzis found in the luxury suites.
I was most impressed by the fact that UBR maintains a kind of old school charm that's an oasis from the other places down the beach blasting music till all odd hours of the morning. This is definitely a place to bring the family. Even though this time I was traveling with friends, I was happy to see the care lavished on kids. As a single woman, I always felt secure while being able to enjoy myself thoroughly -- not something I can say of other places on the West Coast of SL.
The food tries to cater to local and foreign palates. I recommend the local cuisine. But that said, the breakfast croissants can compete with any in Paris. The service can be a bit erratic, but staff is always courteous and definitely try their best to please customers. One big plus is that UBR has a lifeguard patrolling the water -- something I would consider essential.
The best part is location. From any room, you're on the beach in seconds. There's precious little that beats a morning swim at Unawatuna.
