“Relaxation + Old school hospitality + Fantastic suites + Stunning Beach”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

I've been a regular visitor to Unawatuna Beach Resort since the '90s. I've seen it go through ups and downs, and it is definitely on an up!

The hotel is simply beautiful. You get views of ocean sunsets from every room, you can have one of the delicious local cocktails while running your toes through pure white sand. The rooms are clean, have relaxing decor, are well equipped, and there's little that beats an evening soak in the jacuzzis found in the luxury suites.

I was most impressed by the fact that UBR maintains a kind of old school charm that's an oasis from the other places down the beach blasting music till all odd hours of the morning. This is definitely a place to bring the family. Even though this time I was traveling with friends, I was happy to see the care lavished on kids. As a single woman, I always felt secure while being able to enjoy myself thoroughly -- not something I can say of other places on the West Coast of SL.

The food tries to cater to local and foreign palates. I recommend the local cuisine. But that said, the breakfast croissants can compete with any in Paris. The service can be a bit erratic, but staff is always courteous and definitely try their best to please customers. One big plus is that UBR has a lifeguard patrolling the water -- something I would consider essential.

The best part is location. From any room, you're on the beach in seconds. There's precious little that beats a morning swim at Unawatuna.

Room Tip: Ask for the top floor.

Thank you for letting us know about the blocked toilets. We will investigate why our maintenance team did not respond as fast as they should. We are indeed fixing things more slowly than ideal, but this is because the hotel has been completely full this season and our maintenance boys are overworked (and clearly unloved!). UBR is on a program of improvements, and the limited number of public area toilets is top of our list for rebuilding and expanding. I look forward to welcoming you back, with new toilets, soon.

“Great beachfront location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

This was the final hotel of our trip and our favourite. We stayed for 4 nights in a luxury suite with a big room , massive bathroom and a lovely balcony on the 2nd Floor with a stunning view of the beach. The additional extras you get included with the luxury suite are well worth it, our butler was excellent and brought us breakfast on our balcony every morning and 2 nights we chose to dine a la carte, candlelit on the beach - all of which was included. Very good standard of food and service. The barefoot spa just by the beach was excellent and we had head massages on a couple of days. My only complaint would be that the sunloungers on the beach needed cushions as the wooden ones were really uncomfortable! The beach is stunning and its safe to swim. We grabbed a tuk tuk into Galle on a couple of occasions and you get to enjoy the best of both worlds as you come home to the beach.

Room Tip: Luxury suite is well worth it -

We are glad you really enjoyed your stay. You are absolutely correct, the brand new teak sun-loungers on the beach, part of the upgrading program we have started, are uncomfortable without cushions. You will be pleased to know there are matching cushions in UBR orange due to arrive soon (the supplier has been overloaded), and these will greet you on your return!

“Brillliant Location and Very Relaxed Holiday!”

We stayed at the Unawatuna Beach Resort for 4 nights over New Years in the Luxury Suite. The room was excellent, was spacious and clean. Staff were great - very friendly and warm. Location was brilliant too, right on the amazing beach. Could see perhaps some improvement in the food deparment but didnt bother us too much. All in all, very good holiday and would definitely reccommend it. Will be back again. Cant vouch for the other rooms tho!

Ari

Room Tip: Go for the Luxury Suite for a really comfortable, relaxing stay!

“Fantastic location and staff - shame about the food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

Stayed in a luxury suite (had a butler but thid didn't add anything to our stay beyond what is expected at any other hotel without a butler) with great sea views overlooking the pool. The stafff were very helpful with all requests. The rooms were great with the most comfortable beds and a great balcony too. Restaurant mainly buffet but with some a la carte. Food was OK but definitely the weak point for this hotel. Should try to take advantage of all the seasonal fresh fruit. Streets were littered with mangos for sale but none at the restaurant. Beach itself was fantastic. Not too busy and hotel provides loungers for all guests.

Room Tip: Choose above ground floor luxury suites for a good view of the ocean

Thanks for your comments. We are surprised at the food, which most customers consider one of our strengths, but will look into it, and your idea on seasonal fresh fruits well taken.
