A few years ago, the smaller cities in Tamilnadu did not offer too many hotel options. Fortunately, that has changed in the last decade and towns like Tirupur, which attract business visitors from abroad and other parts of India, are now much better served. Proximity to my client’s office was the main reason for choosing Poppy’s, which is on the outskirts of the city.
We did not notice the entrance to the Hotel as we passed it as night had fallen by the time we drove into Tirupur. I called the hotel asking for directions, indicating our location and the direction I had come; the guy who answered the phone sent us in the opposite direction and by the time we started asking for directions I was a good ten kilometers away from the hotel. (Btw, most Turupurians are obviously not aware that the hotel is named after a flower and refer to it as “Puppys” ).
Once I reached the place, I was happy to see the units, named after different flowers, scattered around seven acres of greenery; the irritation of negotiating traffic while going the wrong way, searching for the hotel, melted away.
To enjoy your stay at such hotels is to keep expectations in check - these are not five star places and their prices are quite different; so are their facilities and service. My room was spacious and had the basic furniture, but the décor was what people would call tacky. Most intriguing was a one way mirror located somewhere in between the place where one keeps luggage and the rest of the room! The bathroom was also spacious with a bathtub and basic toiletries. The air conditioning was efficient in spite of the frequent power outages (no fault of the hotel) but the “min bar” was an empty fridge …
The buffet breakfasts, served in the restaurant, to which you had to walk a bit from the room (a problem when it rains), were pretty good and it was a pleasant surprise to see sausages and bacon in the spread, which included standard Indian as well as continental fare. The multinational clientele did look pleased. The dinner and lunch menus were also quite varied and the food was good. Room service was ok though one of the guys was a bit prone to lapses in memory.
The bar menu is very limited (No fault of the hotel, thanks to the liquor distribution system in the state). It was nice to see that the complimentary side eats included crunchy vegetables instead of the usual fried stuff.
Good value for money.
