“Nice hotel let down by poor standards”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 December 2011

Stopped here for a few weeks whilst working at the nearby shipyard. It's a nice hotel, the rooms are quite minimalist but are very comfortable and clean, mine could have done with a bit of paint on one wall however.

The overall experience is let down by poor standards sadly. Breakfast is pretty poor, be late down at your peril as what's out stays out and when it's gone it's gone. I had a late breakfast this morning after weeks of being down at 7am prompt and there was hardly anything left and all the
tables had just been left from previous diners, I had to clear a table myself to sit at.

The same is true of the food in the restaurant in the evening, frankly it's terrible from what I've tried of it. The starters seem to come in portions big enough to feed a small third world country leaving you over full for your main, from my experience of the mains though you probably will want to eat all your starter. The steak with cheese on is terrible, I tried the pork and it was very undercooked and fatty and the lamb is quite nasty. Everything is clearly served a la ding where possible.

There is a nice little cafeteria area when you can chill out that gets quite busy with locals at times, this is the best bit of the experience really.

Could be a great place, let down by terrible food and poor attention to detail. There is a supermarket just down the road, cashpoint opposite and plenty of place very close by to eat at though.

“clean and central hotel with decent facilities.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 October 2011

stayed in this hotel for a month while working in Ferol.the hotel is clean and comfortable, it is fairly central to everything. the rooms are large enough and the bathrooms are large, shampoo, shower gel are provided and refreshed daily as were the towels. only english channel on the tv is bbc world news, but this was to be expected. all in all a comfortable stay. supermarket 100 yards away, and you are never far from a bar werever you are in ferrol.

“Perfect for early morning FEVE train.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2011

Hotel was booked for location - closest to the train station for an early morning get away on the FEVE train. If you too are planning a trip on the FEVE (morning departure time is 8:10), then this hotel which is less than five minutes walk away is ideal.

The room was large, comfortable and clean. The restaurant/bar was open late until 23:00, and was cheap - a couple of hot drinks and pinchos cost 4euros in total. The wi-fi was free and worked well throughout the hotel and outside the restaurant.

The only downside to the hotel was the restaurant didn't open for breakfast until 8am on a weekend (7am rest of the week) which was too late to get anything before our train journey. Nothing in Ferrol was open before that time, so be prepared and buy some snacks for the train before you go (remember - there is no catering on FEVE trains). The four stars of the hotel are probably overrated - but, then again the price reflects this.

The hotel is also ideally located in Ferrol for exploring. Streets in Magdalena district (the grid layed out streets that the hotel is on) are interesting for a stroll, with some nice tapas restaurants and coffee shops amongst them. The harbour front (Paseo de Marina) also had a row of nice bars overlooking the marina, and a very helpful tourist information with several interesting leaflets about the town in English.

“Good for overnight stops”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2007

Barcelo Almirante Ferrol (English spoken) was an unassuming, not expensive but comfortable hotel for our one night. It gave us a decent sized quiet bedroom and quite a large restaurant with a good variety of choice - very nicely cooked. The breakfast selection was very good and fresh and there was more variety than at any other of our hotel destinations. Hotel staff fell over each other to offer an excellent service without being intrusive. The spotless railway station (reflecting the efficient clean cheap and comfortable northern Spanish rail service), was 10 minutes walk away. I would stay here again. If travelling by train around Spain and over 60 and an EU citizen, test the Spanish bureaucracy by patiently insisting on buying a Tarjeta Dorada 12 month OAP ticket to get good discounts.

  • Liked — Good service and a friendly atmosphere and very reasonable and good location
  • Disliked — Our room was a bit dark
