“Great hotel, boring location”

Me and my girlfriend are both students and were looking for an affordable hotel with great value. The hotel it self is overall great. The food is amazing with great variety (aside from breakfast which was pretty much the same all the time). The staff was friendly, like most people in that country. However, the problem is that aside from the staff, none of the people in the area spoke any English, which seemed weird. The rooms weren't that great, but presented great value, keeping in mind this is afterall a 3-star hotel. The biggest problem is the location it self. Town it self is a beach town, located an hour from Barcelona. And like most beach-towns, most of the residents/tourists there are aged above 50. Hence, most of the clubs, pubs and other fun places were made for that demographic. Since me and my GF are in our 20s, the evenings were pretty painful in that matter. You cant even stay in BCN, since the last train from BCN to Malgrat de Mar is at 10:30. Overall, we had an awesome time, great value, AMAZING FOOD and service, mind-blowing amazing beaches. Highly recommended.

“Nice Hotel - Great Value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 October 2010

Nice hotel with large open spaces and public areas. Situated one street back from the main drag, so more opportunity to chill out if that is what you like. The rooms are fine and well appointed and have perhaps the most comfortable beds we have ever had on holiday, Sleep quality was top drawer and this was also aided by a very efficient and remarkably quiet air conditioning system.

The hotel is used by most nationalities throughout Europe, especially eastern europe and a lot of Germans and French as well. Many guests are bused in due to Malgrat's position geographically. I think we were the only British people in the hotel and don't really know the reason for this. However, we were happy with the situation, as you can always go out to the empty bars and restaurants and talk to the bar staff. The lack of Brits is a small price to pay for everything being well ordered and a constant happy feel maintained. We never saw one drunk or heard any raised voices throughout our 5 day stay.

There were some decent shows put on at night with magicians and acrobats and that kind of thing. These lasted for an hour and then it was on with the spanish guests demonstrating to the rest of Europe that their national winter dance classes are really paying off now.

The food is very good at breakfast time, but we have had better for lunch and evening dinner. Can't complain though, as we feel we got a right bargain and the hotel would rightly be drumming up brownie points for the eastern european tastes.

There are loads of swimming pools and these must be heated, as I started breathing within 20seconds after the initial shock of going in. There is also a decent sized indoor pool for those less hearty souls at this time of year. The Bella Playa is at the top end of 3star accommodation and easily surpasses some masquerading as 4star. Bar prices were very good and some of the pubs were also offering a pint of San Miguel at 1.25 euro.

We would recommend the hotel, but in this area, we much prefer Calella as a resort.

“Brilliant hotel, very good value”

Stayed at the Bella Playa for a week, half board basis with my 14 yr old son. Food was excellent, buffet style meals with ample choices of hot and cold dishes, evening meals have a theme every night with chinese, italian, mexican etc as well as the usual choice of hot and cold dishes. Staff very helpful, swimming pools clean and not too busy, plenty of sun loungers. Maid service daily with towels changed as requested, very clean hotel. Entertainment for kids and adults every night to suit varying tastes (magic, dancing, acrobatics, singing, bingo etc).
Malgrat itself is a lovely resort with a popular fine shingle beach, plenty of bars, restaurants and shops. Very handy for the R1, the main train line running every half hour to Barcelona.

“Good looks don't always mean a good hotel”

I stayed at this hotel with my aunt and my cousin last year, overall it was a nice vacation. I really enjoyed the swimming pools that this hotel had to offer, as well as its location. The hotel is quite close to a fantastic beach and the boardwalk with many shops and restaurants.

The food at this hotel was not very good. The food served at the buffet for lunch/dinner was bland and flavorless (except for the cakes and muffins, those were delicious!) The breakfast buffet was not too bad. I would recommend eating at some of the restaurants located on the boardwalk.

Another minus of this hotel was the room. It was small and dark. The TV is tiny and barely worked. But the room is not that important seeing as how when you're in Spain you should be exploring and not staying in your room.

So all in all, a nice hotel minus the food.

P.S. beware that some of the staff only speak Spanish. But nonetheless, all of the staff were quite kind.
