“A great getaway in the middle of nowhere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 September 2008

We stayed 5 nights in this hotel in August 2008 while visiting a friend in the area, and everything was very good. The Parador de Gredos is a large stone building in the middle of nowhere and you can spend long hours just lying on a long chair in one of the terraces while watching the wild and peaceful Sierra de Gredos landscape. In particular, it is great to be on the terrace very early in the morning to see the sun rise in an absolute silence, except the sound of the bells coming from sheep herds in the distance. The room was quite large and very nice and quiet, though with no view at all and a bit dark due to the small size of the windows (it is no problem during the hot spanish summer as it keeps the inside temperature cool during the day, but I imagine this can be quite depressing during wintertime). The breakfast buffet, like in the whole Paradores chain, is spectacular. The only weak point we found is that the place can get very crowded and busy during the weekend, as locals from the nearby villages often come to hang aroung and have a cup of coffee at the hotel. There doesn't seem to be enough waiters to ensure an appropriate service during that peak time. We tried to have a snack in the main cafeteria on a Saturday evening, and gave up after waiting more than 20 minutes at a table full of durty dishes as no waiter showed up. Otherwise, the hotel staff is kind and efficient, the facilities are very clean and there is a nice atmosphere. This is a good place to stay with small children (you will see many spanish families coming here and the staff is very helpful with kids).

“Loved the character and ambience”

Spent three nights at this parador and enjoyed every minute.
Our room overlooked the mountains and the view is stunning. Although the hotel was busy, we heard no noise from other rooms and our room was serviced really well every day. The breakfasts were superb and the dinner at night very good by Spanish standards. This is a very old building and the entrance could do with some attention as they had obviously had some problems with dampness but this did not affect our stay.
Can't wait to return!

“Great position and good facilities.”

A great example of the benefits of staying in Paradors. The position is wonderful providing access to the excellent countryside of the Gredos Sierra, also offering direct access to explore the ancient pine woodlands that lie below.

The rooms are very comfortable, nice and warm in cool weather and surprisingly quiet considering the number of guests. The restaurant is very good and the food is of very good quality with the usual offering of local produce common to the whole Parador group. Dinner is served at a pace that suits your needs and the food is all freshly prepared and delicious. the breakfast caters for all tastes and requirements.

A real bonus is the number of quiet and secluded places to sit and relax amongst beautiful surroundings. I look forward to returning in the future.

“Super-quiet relaxing hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 August 2004

The parador in Gredos is about 45 minutes drive from the parador in Avila and about an hour and a half from the Oropesa parador [which is beautiful], so is convenient if you're on a tour, as we were [we were on honeymoon].

It's quite high up in the Gredos mountains in the middle of nowhere. The bar, lounges and restaurant are all HUGE. The food is local and wonderful, and not overly expensive. Avoid the stewed pig's ears, though...

If you are looking for a super-quiet hotel and want to do nothing but drink Pedro Ximenez sherry in huge sofas, eat lovely grub and read and relax this hotel is top drawer. If you have kids, there's precious little to do.

We had a smaller room at the back overlooking the mountains which was fine for us. At night you can hear a pin drop. There is no noise whatever.

Hope this helps.

“Amazing place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 May 2004

Stayed here in May/04 - it was amazing. Beautiful grounds, great rooms and bathrooms although you need to decide if you want a bigger room or better view. The mountain views are generally smaller rooms while the views to the front of the hotel are of nice outdoor surroundings in much bigger rooms with much bigger bathrooms. There are PLENTY of public balconies, sitting spaces and views to contemplate the surroundings for hours, so if a big room is important - go for it and spend time reading a good book in one of the public areas on every floor (available both indoors and outdoors.) The service was impeccable, the food in the restaurant very good and the staff sweet in all respects. You need a car to do some exploring of the nearby town, but the hiking around the hotel is excellent and you can hire guides, do bike trips etc. directly from the hotel. If you would like to spend a few days "away from it all" in an amazing building with gorgeous surroundings, check this location out. I'm told all the Parador's in Spain are just as nice.
