We have just returned from a week in La Palma at the Hotel Corral de Payo, which we booked through Travel Republic.- brilliant value at just over £150.00 pw for the two of us. However, this is not a hotel, but a block of 6 apartments in the grounds of the owners weekend home. There are also 2 'Casa Rurals' in the grounds which you can rent from the owners via La Palma Tourist websites - ie Oasis de la Palma. We found our apartment to be very comfortable - 1 decent sized bedroom with twin beds - comfy too - a decent bathroom with shower and bath, and living /kitchen area with a large terrace and gardens where there was a small pool.with another terrace and sunbeds. Everything was very clean and new. The settee in the living room area was a sofa bed. No aircon, but we didn't need it anyway. The apartments are on the mountainside near Brena Baja and all have a nice view down to the sea. There are a few other houses around, but generally very quiet. The only concern we had is that the owners were not there to meet us when we arrived as they had been misinformed of our arrival time and there is no reception. I would reccomend these appartments to any one who wants to be quiet and peaceful and away from the purpose built resorts of Los Canjacos , Puerta Naos etc. The appartments are about 6 miles from Santa Cruz de la Palma which is the main town on the island and has some nice shops, bars etc., but I think car hire is a good idea as all the roads are very winding and it takes a long time to go even a short distance. This side of the island is also the 'green' side and we had quite a lot of rain during our stay, which we avoided by driving over to the dry side of the island to Tazacorte and Puerte Naos where the sun was shining. You do need at least a Spanish phrase book in La Palma - virtually none of the people we met could speak English, though there were quite a lot of Germans staying there. The scenery on the Island is breathtaking and a real paradise for hikers and botanists, and we would happily go there again, but perhaps in the winter or summer when we believe there is not so much rain.
