My partner and I arrived at the Ses Estaques after booking it the day before, therefore were prepared to be open-minded. The first thing that hit us was the average age of the clientele. I'd say around 75 would be fair. My initial opinion was that it was no way a four star, even less deserving of the term 'Gold' (Thomson-talk). Disappointment descended in a way only the leisure-deprived, frazzled workaholic could relate to. Went up to the room. Pretty basic but comfortable enough, I reasoned. Went down to the lounge bar for a stiff drink to take the edge off the disappointment - lounge had all the atmosphere of a residential care home. Rain lashed the abandoned sun loungers and the wind whistled through the windows with alarming volume. Had brought my laptop and had to fight the urge to try and book a flight home that same night.
But. Day one passed with cabin fever due to the weather, day two allowed us to venture into St.Eulalia to explore the town. Then, a very strange thing happened on day 3. We both began to see the point of this stuck-in-the-seventies building, and the point was that it was nothing to do with the building at all. The making of this hotel was quite simple, and it hit home with alarming force, just in time for us to really savour our last two days. The staff are absolutely wonderful (I used to switch off when reading other reports which said the staff saved the experience.... Never again!). The entertainment also was brilliant. We've been to half a dozen other Thomson hotels and they really do book some quality acts. But above all else, it was the gentle, exceptionally friendly atmosphere that truly made you feel you had been picked up and dropped into the simple, unfussy, warm and extremely genuine bosom of the seventies. It was contagious, you began ignoring the sixties style decor and paintings (these really were hysterical). We had been seduced.
The very last day we went to the nearby Chill-out bar for a drink. Out of curiosity we walked out of the back of the bar, and towards the Sol Ibiza hotel. Through the grounds and following the coastal path, we walked for 2 hours along the most beautiful rust coloured trail which opened our eyes to an Ibiza we had heard about but not yet seen. Every view was a treat; aqua sea, rocks, little coves and gorgeous little bars - basic but rich with atmosphere and enjoyment.
We had gone in cynical and derisory; we came out disappointed that we wouldn't find out who had won the bean bag throwing competition at lunchtime (tense....). Truly, please try this hotel. If you feel like we did, give it a chance. Enter the spirit and you won't regret it.
