We visited the Don Carlos in October of 2011 as a young, 20 something couple after explaining very clearly to the holiday rep at First Choice that we were looking for somewhere that was not full of nightclubs and 18-30 nights but also not completely dead. I genuinely didn't know what to say when we arrived and were clearly the youngest couple there by at least 40 years (NO EXAGGERATION). We arrived towards the end of dinner so were rushed to go and get something to eat where we were greeted by awkward stares from our fellow diners who clearly had no idea why we were there either!
We complained to the rep the following morning (who in her favour was lovely) as we really feel we were mis-sold on the hotel but other than getting a hotel far away from Santa Eulalia, we had no option but to deal with what we had been given.
The food was pretty awful... though there was plenty of selection so could generally find something to eat if you looked properly enough, but on the second night; something in the hotel restaurant didn't agree with me and so I couldn't face eating there again!!
We had a "garden view" room which was an absolute joke!! There was no garden and only wasteland in front of our small balcony and the room itself was extremely dated though very clean.
The rest of the hotel was clean with the exception of the toilet downstairs which absolutely STANK the entire time we were there and made us feel sick any time we passed!
Pool is small but alright when it's quiet at that time of year, though I can imagine it getting pretty busy in the summer with not very many sun loungers.
We visited the beach in front of the house only once and it's worth noting why.... There are sunloungers surrounding the beach charged at a RIDICULOUS 8 EUROS each! My partner sat his jeans on one, my bag on another for the 10 minutes we went for a swim and the cowboy still demanded we gave him the full 16 euros... so if you want to use the beach, definitely bring your own towel!
Santa Eulalia itself is a beautiful little place with some lovely bars (we particularly loved Bar Ana at the other end of the promenade) which sells the best sangria I've ever tasted and is run by a lovely English couple who were extremely helpful in recommending places for us to go during our stay.
Ibiza in general is absolutely dead after the nightclubs close and to be perfectly honest, unless you're just looking for a cheap week in the sun and aren't bothered with other residents or things to do, I'd give it a miss at this time of year.
We certainly won't be travelling with First Choice again and, until we're quite ready to retire... will not be returning to somewhere like the Don Carlos!
Room Tip: Don't take a garden view!!!!
