Mr. B and myself loved The Buenavista. It has original, wonderful IndoThai decor, beautiful gardens, a deep if very cold pool and is totally original.
I believe we did have one of the best rooms. We were on the top floor in the new building and had a large sun terrace with a sea view, sunbeds and a table and chairs. It is the best balcony/terrace we have ever had in a hotel, totally private, lovely view and trapped all the mid October sun.
The new rooms on the top floor are the same price as the ones on the lower floor whose balcony's were not nearly as good or private with garden views so I guess it is luck of the draw unless you ask in advance.
The owner kindly let me take a tour of the more basic rooms and although they were charming they did seem small and dark, if you can stretch to a room upgrade I believe you will have a much better opinion of The Buenavista.
We found the staff friendly enough if you take the trouble to have basic interaction with them, it is a family business and their home after all.
Breakfast was very good and the different "surprise" eggs every morning kept us guessing.
We enjoyed a couple of drinks in the bar and the garden and didn't have a problem with going to the bar to ask for our drinks or with the staff interacting with each other and locals.
We knew about the steps so these didn't bother us and the staff helped with our bags.
Hot water was a bit hit and miss but the huge walk in shower was a treat and the muslin draped four poster bed very comfortable, no road noise in the top floor rooms.
We had a little nosey in the larger sea front hotels and were extremely pleased that we were experiencing the charm and originality of The Buenavista,
If you enjoy corporate and bland hospitality this is not the place for you.
