“Great location. Hotel Could Be Amazing... If It Tried”
Me and my girlfriend wanted a quiet getaway, somewhere without screaming kids or ravers, somewhere we could get away from it all and just splash about in the sea, watch the sun go down with a cocktail etc and this hotel delivered brilliantly in that respect. We were just a bit let down on a couple of points and feel they're missing an opportunity to capitalise on such a brilliant location for those wanting a quiet retreat.
In short, I would stay there again, but here's some longer feedback broken down by category:
People
The people who go there are generally after the same thing (a quiet break) so it's a very relaxing atmosphere, mostly couples and no-one getting crazy drunk at night or anything. Mostly English and Spanish with some Northern European and French visitors.
Location
The location right on the little beach with the concrete jetty is lovely and quiet, great for swimming and snorkelling as well as just relaxing or watching the sun go down. There isn't much in the vicinity other than villas and other hotels, but you're a 5-minute walk up or down the coast away from slightly busier beaches (Cala Martina to the north, Cala Pada to the south where you catch the boat to Santa Eulalia). There's a Spar shop 5 minutes walk away for food, mags, toys etc and taxis into Santa Eulalia are €9. You can walk to the much less nice Es Cana in 10 minutes where there are lots of shops, restaurants and of course the Hippy Market every Wednesday which isn't as tacky as I thought it would be (I bought some nice stuff!).
Facilities
The main pool is great, usually quiet, with a second pool to the rear for lane swimming, next to which are table tennis tables which we loved. The grounds are well kept with sunbeds easy to grab any time (beach towels are available for a €10 deposit). The gym is OK with running, lifting etc machines.
The rooms are classic Spanish hotel rooms. Perfectly adequate and the free safe, fridge, aircon are all good.
The hotel is spotlessly clean and the maids do a great job.
Food
There is literally nothing good to say about the food. All your suspicions about mountains of bland, tasteless Spanish hotel buffet food will be well and truly confirmed here. On our first night we had no choice but to pay €17 to enter the dinner buffet, but could hardly eat any of it as it was all over-cooked, bland, greasy, rubbery etc. It was clear that other guests weren't too into it either. Whilst the a la carte menu at lunch was a bit better we quickly worked out that buying bread, salad, cheese etc from Spar was a much better bet for any food eaten at the hotel. Basically, assume there is no restaurant.
Staff
The front desk staff were a mixture of belligerent, non-English-speaking people who clearly weren't aware that their jobs lay in the service sector, along with a couple of efficient, English-speaking staff who weren't willing to go further than absolutely necessary. So overall we were pretty disappointed. I personally always make an effort to speak Spanish in Spain but when the things go wrong or you're doing serious transactional stuff, a hotel aimed at foreign tourists should have people with language skills so guests can resolve issues or at least know what's going on. Staff were basically deeply unhelpful.
Also, my girlfriend dropped her wallet in the lobby by the desk on our last day. Once we'd found someone who understood us no-one seemed at all bothered anyway, but thankfully it was returned the following day, only the €150 that was in it was missing. I guess that underlines how much the staff love their guests at Sol S'Argamassa.
Entertainment
I might be wrong about this, but do people who book in at a hotel in the middle of nowhere really want to have a load of really loud kids' entertainers shouting their way through 'Music Man' etc, running bingo sessions in 4 different languages and playing out amateurish versions of Pirates of the Mediterranean til 11pm? I think not, but like I say, this stuff generally drew some people.
Overall, the Melia group probably aren't even aware there's a problem at this hotel because it's always busy and as such it is allowed to rest on the quality of the location. The fact is, it could be a legendary hotel with an amazing reputation, much higher occupancy rates throughout the year and a bigger turnover if they made the most of the setting and the core of the hotel. With friendly staff, decent food and a fresh look at what activities and entertainment is provided I would go back here every year.
Room Tip: Ask for a double bed when you book otherwise I hear you get twin beds.
