Other reviewers have already noted many of the advantages of this parador: its idyllic, peaceful location, its affordable prices (especially in the off-season), its tasty meals. All of these were indeed highlights, and had we only stayed at the parador for the four nights we originally planned, we would’ve left the Pardor de Mazagon quite happy.
But sometimes life throws you a curve ball, and in those instances, you hope that you’re surrounded by the right people. The day before my husband (Dustin) and I were supposed to check out of the Parador de Mazagon, Dustin came down with a case of acute appendicitis that required immediate attention. This led to a very stressful and exhausting week in which he had to have emergency surgery in nearby Huelva, which was made even worse by the fact that virtually no one at the hospital spoke any English (and we don’t speak Spanish).
The service and generosity of the staff at the parador during this difficult experience were PHENOMENAL. Crisitina, one of the front desk staff members, was finishing up her shift just as we decided we needed to take Dustin to the hospital. Rather than call us a taxi as we requested, she offered to drive us in her own car to the nearby medical clinic (which ended up being closed). She then called us a cab from there to take us to the hospital in Huelva and waited with us until it arrived. She did all of this for us after finishing a long, overnight shift without our even asking for her help, and she did it with a smile on her face.
I called the parador from the emergency room later that day when it became apparent Dustin was probably going to have surgery. One of the front desk employees – Pablo, who we will forever think of as a guardian angel – offered to drive all the way to the hospital (30 minutes away) *on his free time* to see if he could help with translations in person. We took him up on his kind offer, and sure enough, Pablo found us in the hospital a few hours later. He helped translate some of our questions for the doctors and nurses, which was extremely helpful, and he called us at least four more times over the next 5 days to make sure we were doing OK and to ask if we needed any more help. Needless to say, we were so incredibly touched by his thoughtfulness and generosity.
In addition to Cristina and Pablo’s help, the parador was extremely accommodating when I asked them to extend our room reservation twice over the 5 days Dustin was in the hospital. They made sure I didn’t have to switch rooms, and they always asked how Dustin was doing when I returned to the hotel late at night after spending the day in the hospital with him.
Dustin and I have been traveling around the world for the last 10 months, and we can honestly say that nowhere on this entire trip have we encountered kindness, generosity, and thoughtfulness that rivals what we found at the Parador de Mazagon. They helped to make a very stressful week a little less stressful, and more importantly, they helped us feel like we were not totally alone in the midst of a country where we didn’t speak the language and a situation that we didn’t have much control over. We will be forever grateful to them for that.
