Stayed here for 3 days and 2 nights.
- hotel is not in Berlin.
- it's about 45 mins by train from the city.
- from the Hoppegarten train station, it's about 3 - 4 km to reach the hotel. Very inconvenient, you have to take the taxi going to and from the train station which will cost you about EUR7.00 one-way
- considering that we got this hotel from Delta and has a rating of 4 stars, for us, it won't even pass for a 2!
- no aircon
- no wi-fi
- staff are very unwelcoming and sometimes rude
- we went to berlin on a sunday and came back around 5PM. we informed the receptionist to have a taxi pick us up at the grocery near the train station because we wanted to buy some stuff before heading back to the hotel, the receptionist just said ok without even informing us that all businesses are closed on sundays. i'm sure they know we are foreigners visiting their country, they could have informed us about this!
- the staff looks irritated whenever i ask them a question. as long as they man their stations daily, that's enough for them. not very customer-oriented!!
- there is a nice bistro with a homey atmosphere next door to the hotel, the owners are very, very friendly! they cook whatever you like

The Hoppegarten Hotel is not in Berlin, and it isn't easily accessible by public transit - whether by car or by taxi+train, it's nearly an hour from the city.

The hotel staff weren't helpful, even by German standards, and the hotel offers no small comforts like toothbrushes or slippers. The corridors of the hotel were very dirty, and so displeased was I that I crushed a ketchup packet on the elevator door before going up to my room at about 5 pm.

The rooms were barren, and make a small town Holiday Inn or Howard Johnson look like a Four Seasons resort by comparison. I image that this must be the most disgusting "four star" hotel in the world. I've traveled extensively and never have I been so displeased with my accommodations.

Since there's absolutely nothing near the hotel, you're more or less forced to go to their restaurant. Suffice to say that the hotel exploits this, and offers nothing less than disgusting food for an outrageous price. Having already spent a week in Berlin, I had become accustomed to bad, overpriced food, but this was so much worse.

The sheets were clean, but they reeked chemical detergent and were incredibly coarse. The rest of the room looked like an office, and didn't appear clean enough to rub with a white cloth.

On my way to checkout, at around 10 am, I noticed that the ketchup was still on the elevator door. I've traveled extensively and eat at restaurants on a daily basis. The Hoppegarten is the worst hotel I've ever been to (outside of the 3rd world) and the dinner I had there was easily the worst food I ate in 2009.

When we got there, we were told "Check in is 2.00 pm; your rooms are not ready!" (We arrived at 11.00 am) and the lady at reception basically told us to go to Berlin & come back later!!! We tried the restaurant which on the web site says open 6.00 am - 10.00 pm - WRONG - they shut 10.00 am - noon!!! We finally extracted forcibly from her that the Chinese restaurant at the end of the road was open (at noon!) So went went there & had a meal & came back at 1.00 pm - a different lady on reception was much friendlier & said that one room was ready & we could go there until the other was if we liked. The other staff were friendly & helpful - it was only 1 lady who was not - I have been at other hotels where they have called housekeeping to get them to get a room ready for us, if we got there early. A room service snack or drink was not offered either.
Location - outside Berlin beside the forest!!! The road was closed & extensive road works meant that it took us between 30 - 50 minutes each day to get to the city centre . The tram was inaccessible as the road was closed; the only other means in was a bus stop near the hotel!
Other comments - we consider this to be a 3* hotel, not 4* because:-
No air con, the window was kept open therefore & we could here the dining room noise + aircraft; housekeeping didn't replace the towels one day & also never replaced anything like tissues & shower gel until they were empty - not good if you're half way through your shower when the gel runs out!!!; they should have modern TVs; we were surprised how many guests brought their dogs; we were in a smoking area which adversely affected my nose which blocked for the duration.
Plus points:-
Large rooms; good restaurant, friendly & helpful staff except for one!; English spoken & large car park, good wellness centre.
The staff phoned a taxi for us each day.
Good if you are driving or are part of a coach tour - apart from that - AVOID!!!

On the way back from Scandinavia, we spent a night at this hotel so we could explore Berlin for a day or two. While this wasnt a memorable or especially enjoyable stay, it wasnt too bad either. Keeping in mind, that we only paid $45/night for the room it was hard to complain about much.

Yes, the hotel seems to be in the middle of nowhere and almost looks like an abandoned building as we initially approached, but once we were inside we felt comfortable. This is an obvious tour hotel because the parking is free and there are lots of rooms to accomodate the large group. As we were checking out, there was one such group checking in. The room was relatively clean, but worn in many places.

It has been several months since we stayed here, so i cant speak much to the breakfast. I guess that is a reflection of how good it was - not particulary memorable. I think I would recommend this place for somebody on a strict budget and hoping to see Berlin. It was about a 20 minute drive from the city center. There are no restaurants in the immediate area, but we found a McDonalds within a short drive on the way out of town.
