My wife and I stayed for one night on two separate occasions in June, whilst driving around France and Italy, staying in some pretty nice places too I might add. (I say this because any review needs some sort of context and benchmark.)
From the moment we arrived, everything was just wonderful. Our welcome from the manager, Madame Schwartz, was so friendly and warm, and yet totally professional and never over-familiar. Arriving tired at 3 pm, we were ushered into the courtyard and sat in splendid summer silence, birds twittering and sun shining as we were brought Chablis and a platter of meats and 6 regional cheeses and breads. Divine. Our standard room was beautiful and quite immaculate - as another reviewer has implied, everything about the place is old world style and charm married with modern conveniences. Exposed timber beams meet classically stylish marble bathrooms meet flat panel TV. Lovely furniture and paintings, classy communal areas, stone staircases - just beautiful.
All the staff are a pleasure and work hard for you, and yet are very relaxed in their manner. Lots of smiles, lots of help. This is not a hotel in the fully accepted sense of the word. There is no restaurant or bar as such, no swimming pool, no air conditioning - but none of that matters. Use the place as a quiet escape, or as a base for exploring Burgundy, and simply eat out. We enjoyed meals in Nuits St Georges and Gevrey Chambertin which are very close by, and there are a couple of restaurants in the pretty village which you can stroll to in no time at all. If the weather's nice you can have breakfast in the garden, or if indoors you can sit at a huge dining table with the other guests (not a problem at all, the place is lovely and quiet, and even when full it feels empty - just 10 rooms here).
When we returned on our way home two weeks later we were greeted like long lost family and felt instantly delighted to have chosen a repeat visit. A different room this time, again just standard but equally beautiful, and a quick tour of some of the suites revealed that they were also lovely. We also visited their 900 year old caves underneath the building for some wine tasting - expensive Premier Crus and Grand Vins included - and whilst you can probably buy similar wines cheaper, you really don't mind if the service and tutoring are friendly and informative, which they were.
Heartily recommended to anyone, but especially those who appreciate something a little different and a bit classy.
