The one good thing about the Hotel Sonne is that you can ski back from the nearby slopes almost to the hotel door. This is a rare thing in Kirchberg, where most skiers trudge up long steep hills carrying heavy skis to the many other hotels in town. The access going to the slopes is not so convenient however, as there is no lift nearby, but the hotel does provide a free shuttle bus service to the main lift – the Fleckalmbahn, about a mile away.
But the good points stopped there for us, a couple in mid years, staying for a week’s skiing in February. I have to say that almost everything else ranged from poor to terrible. I could forgive the minor irritations, broken lightbulbs, door keys that frequently didn’t work, a shower that was a tiny cubicle with water that alternated between freezing and scalding in the same minute. On one occasion the shower was having a particularly bad day, and spouted air and steam, hissing and spitting like a demented python. But all these were as nothing compared to my two main complaints: the food and the smoke. We started on half-board, but after two nights could stand dinner no longer. The dinners consisted of four pretend courses of the cheapest and most poorly prepared food I have encountered in the Alps. It would be best described as poorly cooked, meanly portioned kiddie food. A so called turkey escalope was a wafer thin strip of watery turkey, fried and coated with some sort of brown artificial flavouring. I suppose the chef felt it needed something as the meat itself was so totally tasteless. Other dishes were of a similar standard and the appetisers and desserts were laughable in their quality and constituents. I feel certain that inmates of the average prison routinely dine far better.
The other serious issue was smoke. If you are not a smoker yourself, don’t even set foot in this hotel. During our stay it was so smoky in the open plan bar and reception area that I felt I needed breathing apparatus to survive a transit. And as this smoky zone was open plan to the restaurant, naturally it all spilled in there too, where in any case people smoked at table. In fairness the top floor of the hotel was non-smoking, so we could avoid smoke in our room.
But this brings me to the next disappointment of the stay. We booked online with the hotel, and chose a deluxe room with balcony. And that’s what we got, except that one would normally expect a balcony to overlook something: mountains, gardens, even a driveway or back yard. But no, not room 800. I was amazed when I opened the balcony door and found that our room had the facing board of the roof eves extending down across our balcony cutting off all views to the garden or mountain, unless of course you lay on the floor or crouched very low. In fact we did this every morning to determine whether it was sunny outside or not, as with no other window we certainly couldn’t see the sky by any other means from our room.
We once tried the indoor pool at the hotel spa, which looked nice, but was so hot that it felt like giant tepid bath, and was in no way refreshing. It was packed with unruly children too, who all screamed and shouted at once, dispelling any notion of the advertised relaxation or wellness. We never returned.
If you decide to stay at this hotel take plenty of cash. They don’t take anything else at the bar - no room charge, no credit cards, just cash. In fact they clearly like to collect wads of cash, as they will also sell you a ski-pass, but once again, cash only.
And finally, I would have posted this review on the last night of my stay, but the advertised free hotel wireless internet doesn’t reach my room with a reliable signal, and I can’t face the smoke of the bar, so I guess it will be when I get home.
All in all, it’s such a shame, as Kirchberg is a pretty village in a nice ski area, but this hotel hardly ever failed to disappoint.
