I loved, loved, loved the location of this hotel—just 20 minutes scenic drive out of Salzburg, right on a lake and in beautiful country. I stayed for 3 nights and unfortunately it was clouds-on-the-ground and rainy the whole time so I couldn't see anything, but still the are was beautiful!!
I asked, and they just became a Sheraton (and thus SPG property) two months ago.
And it shows. They still need to do upgrades and changes to meet the SPG standards. The beds are abominable. It's hard to even describe. They are old mattresses that are hard and slick and have no mattress pads, so it feels like you're sleeping on plastic, almost. Anything but cozy!!
The rooms are nice, however—very Tyrolean and cozy. I was given an upgrade with a balcony and actually requested to not have a balcony as due to the weather, I felt the balconies blocked even more daylight as they have tall wood dividers between rooms, as well as face the other wing of the building. I wanted to see grass and sky (even though no sky was visible!! lol). Ok, I wanted to see grass and clouds, and at least not feel even more like I was in a cave!!
The front desk staff was superb. They helped me switch rooms without any angst and gave me lots of local overview information upon checking in. I took the lead from one of the brochures the gal gave me and went on a hike in the forest along a river the next day—in the rain!
Breakfast was awesome—pretty much one of the best breakfast buffet spreads I've come across in Europe so far.
I did dine in the restaurant my last night and the food was ok but the service was atrocious. I ordered their local specialty of Perch from the lake and of the two tiny pieces I was served, one was not cooked. The server completely ignored me and then when she did take my order, I never saw her again, all the while she was extremely present and attentive to the table of 6 next to me. She took my order after I waited over 20 minutes, and I never had contact with her again.
Overall, I will stay here again and hopefully will get better weather so I can actually see the beautiful place it is!!
