“The Perfect Hotel!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2012

What a spectacular hotel – in every way. The building, the style, the interior décor, the rooms and suites, the staff, the management, the dining room, the food – all superlative.

The old castle has been totally renovated to the highest standards, and the new wings are every bit as beautiful. I cannot emphasize enough how grand the Schloss Velden is.

As part of our Christmas vacation this year, I stayed at the Schloss Decemebr 23 – 27 with my sister and her husband. I had a “Deluxe” room, and they had a junior suite. The deluxe room was spectacular enough – huge by any standard and decorated with exquisite taste. But the junior suite was exceptional – it featured a stone wall separating the living area from the bedroom, complete with a see-thru fireplace. Everything was in tip-top condition, and the staff could not do enough for you. When communicating with the hotel, they assign a “Personal Assistant” who will take care of any and all requests. Our contact was “Nancy” and her expertise and enthusiasm were remarkable. The doorman was “Sonny” and his personality was perfect, and his linguistic skills superb (6 languages).

The rooms were fabulously electronic. The drapes could be remotely opened and closed, the lights could be controlled from bedside, or other strategic points around the room, the bath or the foyer. Closet space was phenomenal. The bathrooms spectacular, with both a large bathtub, and a marble encased walk-in shower. The sinks were large square glass vessels, completed by very high-tech plumbing fixtures.

The spa facilities were among the best I have ever seen. The indoor pool is huge and the tile work is exceptional. A large sauna, steam room and hot pool are also available. The exercise room had the best equipment, and the Zen Garden relaxation room looked inviting! I did not indulge in any spa treatments, myself.

The general manager, Mr Alexander Orlandini was omnipresent. He was always concerned with the guests’ well-being and circulated thru the hotel facilities on a regular basis.

Christmas Week dining was a brilliantly staged affair with special menus each evening. The food was fantastic, the service superb. I was startled to realize that the plate side silver service was, in fact, Christofle. Absolutely superb. The breakfast buffets were feasts for the eyes and taste buds! Everything perfectly arranged and presented. Everything fresh and the best available. No stinting on quality, whatsoever!

Schloss Velden is fairly remote – midway between Villach and Klagenfurt, in a small town in southern Austria. It sits on the beautiful Wörthersee Lake; so the beauty of the surroundings complement, perfectly, this grand hotel.

This hotel does not have a nickel and dime policy on anything. Included in the rate are breakfast, the contents of the mini-bar (non-alcoholic), free internet, free use of the spa facilities, and free parking. Pretty amazing!

I cannot praise this hotel and its staff enough. This is probably my favorite European hotel!

The Tripadvisor title of this hotel indicates that it is a Capella Hotel. They no longer manage the property as of September 1, 2011 – it is now a Falkensteiner property.

Breathtaking location by Wörthersee with breathtaking view just a short drive both from Villach and Klagenfurt. Charming historical building with elegant interior, a perfect combination of classic furniture and modern technology. Service is exceptional even for a ***** hotel.

Room Tip: If you want a touch of classic luxury ask for a room in the historical building with view to the lak...

“My new favorite hotel”

I've stayed here a couple of times already this year and already have a reservation for over Christmas.
This is a fabulous hotel. It has the German efficiency but added to that has the Austrian charm. Kind of makes it perfect.
The staff here are really what makes this hotel special. Ever so polite and friendly and go out of their way to make your stay as enjoyable as can be.
The facilities at this hotel are second to none.
Rooms in both the original schloss and modern wing are to the highest standards. Those in the orginal schloss are ever so romanic while those in the modern wing are cool chic.
Only downside I can comment on are the overcomplicated touch screen room controls. Sometimes a simple switch will do!

If you're ever at the Worthersee I highly recommend this hotel.
Yes it's very expensive during the summer months but out of those periods there are some fabulous deals to be had. Go on treat yourself, we certianly do.

“Ambitious attempt, but fails as a luxury hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 July 2011

My wife and I spent 1 night at the Schloss Velden on 6/22/11. We were not impressed. We attempted to check in at 3:50pm and were told the room was not ready and that we would have to wait 30 minutes (check-in time 3:00pm). The attitude of the front desk person rubbed me the wrong way and did not set a very positive tone for the rest of our stay. Close to 30 minutes later our room was indeed ready and we were escorted to the room down some long, ugly, garish, chrome laden, downright hideous public spaces with hellish overly bright fluorescent and LED lighting. Up the elevator 1 floor to the room corridor which, thankfully, was far less hellish. We were shown our standard King bedded room in the historic building (view across “garden” to new wing). The room was large, but done in a bland international luxury style that exuded little charm with no sense of being on an Austrian lake. The room was very dark with poor lighting. Nice well lit bathroom with impressive rain shower, but again rather generic. Plenty of mostly useless gimmicks in the room like touch screen panels to control the lights that were mounted where the light switch would have been… what’s the point? Some pleasant surprises included a free minibar (water, sodas, juice) and a turndown service that included a nice ready-to-go setup to make coffee in the morning (coffee press, water, excellent coffee + kettle and cups). On the plus side a very good bed and the room was also very quiet. Dinner and buffet breakfast at the restaurant in the hotel was quiet good with a nice view of the lake, but something was always just not right… difficult to explain.

I could go on and on about other things we did not like (and a few I did), but I’ll switch to the town of Velden. It too was a bit disappointing. Unlike lakes in Switzerland that have long beautiful lakeside promenades with wonderful landscaping, Velden’s lake front is mostly private areas that individual hotels own with beach chairs, etc. for their guests. So the walk along the lake is views of tall hedges and fences around each of these areas. Schloss Velden has it’s own private area which includes a lakefront restaurant.

There was a sports car exhibition/rally of some kind in town and the front of the hotel was wall to wall Lamborghinis and Ferraris. Some might find this interesting, I found it annoying. How long do you need to own a Lamborghini before you learn how to turn off the car alarm before unlocking it?

We took the early morning train out of Velden to Vienna the next morning, so all in all not a big loss as our time there was short.

The owners made an ambitious architectural choice in the remodel, and I think it fails. Further, the town of Velden, while an OK place to spend the weekend with some buddies (if you live in Austria)… just does not strike me as a luxury destination.

Dear guests,

thank you for your feedback. It’s very important for us, to know, how people experience their stay at Schloss Velden, a Capella Hotel. We are happy, when we receive positive comments and thankful for constructive criticism, because this is a chance for us to improve.
We are really sorry that you had no very warm welcome at our hotel and that the room wasn’t ready at 3:50 pm. Cordiality as well as caring and timely service by our employees are essentially and have top priority!

As you’ve mentioned, a sports car festival took place during your stay at Velden – so there have been many people and cars in the streets and – regrettably – accompanied by some noise.
In future we will point out this fact more than we do it now when our Personal Assistants make their pre-arrival-call!

Referring to your notes in respect of our interior: The exclusive marble at our lobby indeed looks dark and maybe doesn’t meet everyone’s taste.
The furniture of the rooms isn’t the typically Austrian style, it’s more international, but in return our hospitality and some culinary delicacies are regional.
We would be glad, to get the possibility, to welcome you at Schloss Velden, a Capella Hotel, once again and to convince you, that the hotel and the region around the lake are worthwhile to enjoy a pleasant stay with us.

If you want to get in touch with us, please feel free to contact us via info.velden@capellahotels.com at any time!
