The airlines, Corsair, sent me to Dakar, Senegal but sent my luggage to Ile de la Réunion. I didn't get it back until the day before departure! To add insult to injury I had to pay the delivery for the suitcase they lost from the airport out to the hotel! I do plan on getting reimbursed for this and other things however. Luckily other traveller's helped out with loaning me some items and on the 3rd day one of the hotel staff members, Amadou, really took matters into his hands and told the Hotel Manager about my plight who in turned bought me some items to help get me through the week. I was also offered an excursion, which was nice of them. The hotel is really well situated and you have the choice between the busy and active Calaos side or the quiet but pretty Hibiscus side. I stayed on the Hibiscus side this time for my 2nd visit and really appreciated the calm and getting served at the restaurant instead of self service at the buffet on the Calaos side. I had excellent fish each day and they offered some unique choices such as shark, sea urchin and giant seas snails. This part of Saly is loosing their beach, which was sad to see, such a change from my first visit in 2005. The hotel has done as much as they can for something that they have no control over in the first place. Access to the water is much better on the Hibiscus side. It is important to note that this is a hotel for primarily French guests but many staff can speak some English. The hotel overall is very clean, the grounds very well maintained, the staff very nice and helpful and they offer a wide variety of activities and excursions so it is impossible to get bored. One must-see excursion is to go to M'Bour to see the arrival of the fishermen. An unforgettable experience! You can go by motorized pirogue from the hotel in only 20 minutes. The one I noticed is that the rooms for individual travelers are much smaller than the doubles so that was a small disappointment. Also, earplugs are absolutely indispensable because there is a mosque very close by and there are prayer calls and religious music throughout the night and early morning. Don't let this stop you, though, because that is all part of the atmosphere of visiting a primarily Muslim country. Be prepared for a horribly long and painful experience coming and going through the Dakar airport!! I don't know when but a new airport not far from Saly is supposed to open in the next year or so and that will make life so much easier.
