“A pleasure to stay with....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 March 2011

Have read the reviews and to be honest find them a little disappointing and thought I would have to comment as I found the hotel clean, family friendly with a very supportive team of staff who made our stay very pleasurable!!!
Ok it is not the Ritz but if you are looking for a hotel where you can use as a base to explore the west coast at an affordable rate, that is a stones through from the local restaurants and the harbour then it is well worth a visit!
We caught the steam train from Fort William which added to the pleasure of the whole experience and would easily recommend the whole package.

“Fantastic Night's Stay At The Marine Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 February 2011

Good value for money. We were treated excellent and all the staff were extremely friendly. We really enjoyed our breakfast the next day and the scenery was fantastic around the hotel. I don't know what the other reviewers were expecting from a two star hotel, but it did the job for us and we'd happily go back.

We had a chat with the owners whilst at the hotel and had been notified that they had just replaced the carpets, tv's, lights, bar, kitchen equipment and more just before we arrived.

Whilst some of the reviews on this site may have been relevant a year ago, they are out of date now.

“An absolute disgrace”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 August 2010

I took my wife away for what I thought was going to be a wonderful, romantic four days,
to the Marine Hotel in Mallaig. What I actually took her to was a disgrace that advertises
it's self as an Hotel. When we arrived,we were given the keys to a room that the "receptionist" was obviously far too embarrased to take us to,or it could have been that she was just too lazy to climb the stairs to take us there, I'm still not sure which. When the room was booked I thought that we were going to have a lovely view of the sea,so romantic, but no,the first thing we say when we walked into our £90 a night room was a view of a brick wall from our window. There was absoulutely nothing about this place that merits the prices that they charge. The carpets were stained, towels that my wife wouldn't even use as cleaning rags, light fittings that are hanging from the ceiling, badly dented heater, torn wallpaper, veneer damaged dressing table, which my wife torn a dress on,A midew covered shower tray and the cheapest of cheap toilet rolls. The room was meant to be cleaned every day,but the only thing that was done was ,the dirty towels were folded, not changed in the four days we stayed there and the bed covers were straightened up,which my wife had already done.I had read previous reviews from 2009 about this place, but thought that as it was supposed to be under new management and renovations had been done,as stated on their site, that we would take a chance. We were told that because they get a bad reception that, that was the reason our TV kept changing channels...no....in fact they just haven't bothered tuning in their TVs.All I can say about this place is avoid it like the plague !The staff that we came across were unfriendly, uninterested and appeared to want to be somewhere else. The kitchen was closed for three of the four days we were there, except fot breakfast, thank heavens we don't eat as was their Residents Lounge.
We had a " Quiet " drink in their bar, which I won't bother to try and describe.......except to say......Don't bother with that either, even if you visit Mallaig. My wife has forgiven me by the way on the way back home to Edinburgh,I took her to stay in a lovely Guest House in Arisaig.

“lone traveller - what a rip off”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 August 2010
1

I have never wrote a hotel review before - I am not a fussy person.
If you like 1960s decor, kids playing football outside your bedroom window in the street at 10.15 at night, getting stuck in the shower as the door would not open properly, the bedroom window opened about an inch, toast for breakfast [no scottish breakfast available] then this place is for you.
Oh, and I got charged £50.00 for b & b - as I was a lone traveller, for the privilege of all this luxury.
Keep away, unless you are desparate for a room, as I was.
You have been warned.
