“The only nice thing might be the price.”

Stayed here for one night only waiting for the ferry to Skye. The price, £50, was ok at the time we stayed and this was what made us go there as it is largely advertised outside. However, this is the only refurbishment we could find, and I suspect some of the reviews here to be bogus as the carpets for sure are not new, neither is the kitchen, bar and television. I could lift the mystery around the TV's ongoing switching between programs, it seems to me it is an interference with other people using their remote control. Walls and doors are very thin and you can actually hear everything that is going on in the hotel. Including people running through corridors at night, I suppose it was some of the very recommendable council area like patrons from the downstairs bar. The hygiene could be all right however, except for the really appalling state the bath tub was in. It is best to use slippers when taking a shower. Windows are full of bird droppings which may be supposed to make the sea view more authentic. No reception, no restaurant, no service, no breakfast.
Overall I felt like in a rundown motel with local hillbillies down at the bar and staff I would not necessarily trust more. I witnessed one gentleman checking in and staff being mockingly polite for him booking such a distinguished hotel. Ah yes, the nicest was the bathroom bin which had not been emptied for ages, very interesting contents. The price could be all right as it is the cheapest hotel around but it certainly still is not value for money. You can stay there without too much disgust, but I definitely would not stay there for more than one night, would choose a B and B if available, unless you risk spoiling your holiday. Modest patrons only.

“If it were the only hotel in Mallaig I would never never never stay again.”

When we arrived and my husband wanted to use the only toilet in the bar area. He was told in a very agressive manner by I asume the owner, a woman with very short hair. Before we could explain who we were we were told my husband could not use the toilet and we were put out and told to come back at 2pm.
The reception was closed the hole 2 days we stayed and were told if we wanted to speak to someone we had to go through the bar which I have seen better iin a cow shed.
The room was dated with wallpaper hanging off the walls, bird droppings on windows and bed lights hanginf off wall. We were unable to watch tv as the stations kept changing to sky tv for no apparent reason. We were not welcome but came face to face with a very stressed out and obnoxious person. The website shows beautiful pictures of a lounge are and dinning area, believe me this is not the case, there is no lounge or dining area but a very dirty bar. £65 a room is daylight robbery and I will certainly telly all and sundry not to step foot in the place.

“Good value”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 April 2011

For a 2 star hotel, this was very good. Heaven knows what those people were expecting-it is a 2 star hotel in Mallaig! OK, there was no-one in Reception when we arrived, but there was a notice directing us to the bar, where we were greeted by a charming barmaid, who made us welcome and booked us in.

The rooms were OK-there was even a hairdryer! We were told breakfast was from 8am, but discovered that it started at 8.30, which is a bit late for the ferry. The food was good and plentiful.

The only thing I would suggest is that they replace the carpets in the entrance/steps-it is old and smells musty, which does not give a good first impression. But, other than that-it is a decent hotel, and very handy for the ferry.

“the most miserable hotel experience we've ever had”

we arrived at the marine hotel from the skye ferry to find reception completely deserted and a message to ask at the bar next door - when we did so the barman knew nothing about it, so we waited on the steps until someone finally turned up who could give us a key.
the room was ok, no complaints there, but when we went down for breakfast the next morning once again the hotel was completely deserted and the restuarant area locked, so we had to go to the co-op opposite to get something to eat.
we have never stayed at such an unwelcoming place before, and our advice if you are thinking of booking, is: DON'T.

“A pleasure to stay with....”

Have read the reviews and to be honest find them a little disappointing and thought I would have to comment as I found the hotel clean, family friendly with a very supportive team of staff who made our stay very pleasurable!!!
Ok it is not the Ritz but if you are looking for a hotel where you can use as a base to explore the west coast at an affordable rate, that is a stones through from the local restaurants and the harbour then it is well worth a visit!
We caught the steam train from Fort William which added to the pleasure of the whole experience and would easily recommend the whole package.
