“Relaxing All Inclusive Break in quiet resort”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2011

Resort: Agia Pelagia is a quiet, more traditional type of resort situated approx 20km west of Heraklion. The region is very hilly with a precarious twisting road from the resort to the main routeway. The resort is small and traditional with a few bars and restaurants on or near the sea front. The beach is sand/shingle and is very narrow. Just enough space for a couple of recliners (cost 2 eoros each) Would consider suitable for older couples or young family. Not much to do for 18-30 age group although there are some water sports available. The Hotel is 5 mins walk from beach.

Hotel: Alexander House is a family run hotel - it is smaller than average (est 150/200 guests in August) Majority of guests appeared to be from Germany, Scandinavia, Russia & E. Europe. Few British (20 or less) but this did not detract from our stay. The rooms are comfortable and functional all with Air-con. Reasonable size freshwater pool with separate child area (still approx 2 ft deep) No problems in obtaining loungers in pool area. There are 2 bar areas - main one closed until evening. All inclusive includes Beer, Local Spirits, coffee, soft drinks & Ice cream available after 10.30 - local spirits being Ouzo & Raki. You will pay extra for Gin, Vodka etc but prices cheaper than in beachside bars. There is a Gym, Games Room (Pool Table, Table Football, Internet, TV) and Table Tennis. There is little or no day/evening entertainment to speak of and we missed the Cretan evening.

The main potential drawback is that the Hotel is on a steep incline with many steps so would not be suitable for very young children in pushchairs, elderly or anyone with walking difficulties.

Food: In view of hotel size there is perhaps less choice than some larger establishments. In the main the food was of reasonable quality with Hot Food, Salads, Soups and freshly baked bread. Hot food mainly Pork/Lamb in sauce, Rice, Pasta and vegetables. If you like blancmange, melon and sweet honey desserts you will enjoy the pudding menu. Restaurant fairly informal and not crowded-the requirement for men to wear long trousers to dinner not enforced. Beer, Red/White wine, water and sort drinks on tap. You can fill a jug and bring to your table. (and refill if necessary!) Breakfast/Lunch menu adequate.

Summary: If you are looking for a relaxing, all-inclusive break in a small, low-key Hotel this establishment is worth considering. Staff are polite and friendly and there are reasonable facilities and food on offer. There are no Holiday Reps covering this Hotel (good or bad - you decide) but Reception will assist in booking excursions etc. I would not consider this a suitable hotel or resort for these looking for an active or lively holiday.

“Great value for money”

This hotel was a bargain for the price. We had 3 all inclusive meals which were quite good and all the drinks and snacks for free also. The hotel is situated in a charming town with breathtaking views. The staff were very nice and the rooms were well equipped and comfortable. I will definitely go back next year.

“Lots of Steps”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 June 2008

Entirely pleased with the hotel rooms although to get to any room meant negotiating quite a number of steps; making it unsuitable for anyone with a disabililty. The hotel staff were excetionally friendly and very helpful. The rooms were cleaned, and I mean cleaned, every day with towels changed every day. Food was typical 'Mediterrainian' with a satisfying choice, I am an acknowledge 'fussy eater' but found something to my liking every meal. The hotel is situated within 150 meters of the sea front with very pleasant views from all aspects. One of the other reviews states that there was no meat in the menus, I don't know which hotel he is refering to but it certainly wasn't Alexander House as there was at least two different meats on every dinner with one at lunch time.

  • Liked — quality of the rooms
  • Disliked — the high number of steps to move about the hotel

“terrible hotel - bad food!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 August 2007

This is the worst hotel ever.
To be an Al inclusive it is really bad.
The food was tasteless and they serve no meat.
Of course - if you want to pay 18€/pers. for a Cretan night you will be served a barbecue. The dessert was the same every day-boring??!!
The coffee does not taste coffe. The snacks they say they have is a baguette wrapped in plastic and old ice cream.
The staff is charmless! The management is incompetent.
The pool is dirty. So, if you want to have a NICE vacation do not go there.
