I have visited Provence ten times, but this was my most memorable trip. Chateau de Mazan is located in an area that is home to some of the most beautiful villages, scenery, and sunsets I have ever seen. I prefer this part of the Vaucluse because Peter Mayle did not make it famous so it is not inundated by busloads of tourists. (I have read every Peter Mayle book and have a collection of movies made famous by his books so I also love the Provence region he writes about. "Toujours Provence." I could not agree with him more.) However, Chateau de Mazan is in the part of Provence that is my favorite. The vineyards are lovely and the wine is equally amazing. We always take a couple bottles back to the U.S. to share with friends or family and reminisce about our days in Provence. Hilltop villages, markets, and wine trails are nearby to explore.
Chateau de Mazan dates to the 18th century and was home to the Marquis de Sade so it has interesting historical significance. The manager and entire staff are excellent. They were helpful, courteous, and patient during our 3 day stay. The room we stayed in was a spacious garden suite with lots of character and a private terrace that opened on the ground level giving close access to the swimming pool. You could also walk through the garden to the parking lot easily from our room. The garden rooms are convenient if you use the pool a lot or need to go to your car. I saw many of the hotel rooms which were decorated with imagination and various color schemes. Request a certain color and bath situation and they will accommodate you. Many Americans seem to prefer showers so ask for one if that is important to you. We made time to relax on our private terrace and shared a bottle of wine with friends.
I cannot say enough about the amazing food. From the aperitif to the dessert course, it is gastronomic excellence with a delightful surprise or two. I had a filet of beef cooked in red wine and garnished with a zucchini flower that had some delectable stuffing in it. If you enjoy French food and wine, make sure you make a reservation for dinner.
Chateau de Mazan is expensive, but in my opinion, I believe it was fair for the value of the experience. If you are a frequent traveler in Europe or your goal is the experience, you will likely concur. If you want nightlife, beaches, and glitz, go to the riviera. If you like plush carpets, high rise hotels with 24 hr room service, and noisy crowds, these can be found in the cities and areas that cater to tourists. If you prefer hotel chains with a $10.00 breakfast buffet, these are available also in France. If you are willing to part with some cash and enjoy an elegant but not stuffy atmosphere in the French countryside where just taking a stroll takes you to a landscape you will never forget, Chateau de Mazan is a place I would recommend.
Go on the hotel's web site and look at the photos. The chateau is lovely and radiates that provencal charm that just makes one want to buy a house nearby and live that life. We were there the last weekend of June, and it was hot so the unheated pool was very refreshing. The Pizzeria de Mazan is a short walking distance from the chateau. It offers great pizzas and salads and has a friendly village atmosphere. Cross the street from the pizzeria and have a drink at the bar. The bartender was awesome.
The staff at Chateau de Mazan made me feel like I was a special guest in a chateau in the French countryside. Thank you Frederic, Pascal, Dominique, Claire, and the entire staff. We came prepared to have an amazing time. Our family found Chateau de Mazan to be everything we hoped it would be. Je reviens.
