We arrived in Le Crotoy for an impromptu weekend at All Saints (a holiday time in France and nearby Belgium) to find just about everything fully booked. We ended up taking a room in the 'Jolie Brise' bed and breakfast ('chambres d'hotes') which was on the list given us at the tourist office. The room had a tiny 'sit-bath' with a shower attachment. But too late we discovered that there was no wall-fixing for the shower, no shower curtain, and no plug for the bath. So, effectively no shower and no bath. But that was a minor problem compared with the quantity of other people's hair on the bath cubicle floor. Though I'm sure the towels had been washed, none of them felt or smelled fresh and one of the bath towels was dotted all over with patches where the fibres were stuck together by some deposit or other. The bed was so soft and lumpy it felt like sleeping in badly-made custard, the water glasses were placed rims down on a plastic tray covered in a sticky film of dirt, the wardrobe was a closed-off corner of the room which smelled overpoweringly of mildew, and the wallpaper (also showing mildew) was beginning to come away from the walls. At least there was good fresh bread at breakfast, though neither we nor our co-guests could identify the fruit responsible for what we were told, on enquiring, had been bought as orange juice. Of course it was cheap compared with an hotel, but as far as I know it wasn't particularly cheap compared with other chambres d'hotes, and given the level of hygiene and lack of facilities or comfort, any payment at all seemed too high - I would certainly have to be paid a considerable amount to stay there again. It'll give us a story to tell, but we won't be repeating the experience!
