“To get away from it all...”

The chateau was extremely charming, as was its owners. We were made to feel very much at home.

We had to set off very early en route to Bordeaux but the owners even made us a take-away breakfast in the morning....a really nice gesture.

Unfortunately the local restaurant is closed on a Monday which meant we had to go into the local towns (12km) but there's reasonable choice.

It is a fantastic location in which to chill, but you do have to travel if you want to do activities.

“Enchanting place to stay”

We stayed one night in the chateau, on our way to Carcassonne from Biarritz. We have 2 children under 3 so were a little apprehensive about the stay. I cannot recommend the accommodation or the hosts highly enough. We received a genuine and warm welcome from the Count and Countess. We had two adjoining rooms which were extremely comfortable, very spacious and spotless. Our hosts were extremely friendly and interesting, making a huge effort to converse in excellent english. They were also very good with our two children.
The local restaurant serves divine food, so the fact that the accomodation is B&B only should not deter anyone from staying - the restaurant is approx 3 mins walking distance away.
Breakfast was beautifully presented and very tasty, with all local and home grown produce.
We were sorry to be leaving, however, the 1 hour journey from here to Carcassonne is worth doing for the scenery.

“We want to return!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2008

My wife and I stayed at the chateau for a long weekend in mid-July 2008. The hosts could not have been more helpful and charming. Our room was large, well appointed and elegant. It was spotlessly clean. Having asked for hot water for tea, each day fresh hot water and biscuits were placed in the room without asking further. Breakfast was outstanding with home-made jams and garden grown fruit. The grounds were large and we were welcome to relax in deck chairs in the sun.
We were treated as personal guests, not just customers.
We plan to return!
Christopher and Felicity Smith.

“Run Down & Gloomy Chateau”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 July 2008

We were so excited about staying at the Chateau but were so disappointed with the result. Although our rooms were well appointed and very spacious, the hosts were less than welcoming, the chateau (other than our rooms) is run down, gloomy and depressing. There are no guest salons as promised. The lighting is left off in the evening so if arriving back after dark, the property and chateau are in darkness. (around 10pm). Thank goodness for the wonderful hosts at the local restaurant next door - Les Marronniers - a wonderful family run restaurant with very welcoming and friendly hosts. When we advised the owners of the chateau that we were leaving (we moved to Hotel de la Cite in Carcassonne - excellent hosts) they were not at all surprised - obviously we were not the first guests to depart early. This was the only place in all of France and Italy that had requested 100% deposit and the only place we left early.

  • Liked — Size & Style of the rooms
  • Disliked — Hosts and run down state of the remainder of the chateau

We are surprised that those who say such bad things about our chateau and about us, have not dared to leave their real names. We have never had “Baikies” as guests, but Rosalind Green.
In July it is necessary to half close the shutters against the heat of the day. It is thus dark but cool in the house.
The dining room has a lounge area, in the neogothic style, of 50 square metres. This should be large enough for an establishment with only 3 guest rooms.
The chateau is not in a bad state of repair: It was restored for 300 thousand euros, including the 1000-square-metre roof (structure and tiles).
The restaurant, Les Marronniers, has denied saying that they were not surprised by the early departure of the people in question. We believe they are insincere, that in fact they changed their minds about their trip and tried to blame their decision on us (changes to their trip, their children’s changing whims, ill-researched information).
Regarding the outside lighting, it is possible that we might have forgotten to switch it on one evening; but the car park opposite and the street are lit all night. Two doorbells are always available.
The misunderstanding has arisen, in our opinion, from these guests wishing to be very close to Carcassonne, while it is clearly mentioned on our website that we are located 50 km away from this beautiful city.
Concerning the welcome we extend to our guests, it is not sycophantic, but polite and warm; our visitor’s book is filled with courteous and kind comments which we can show you at any time.
Finally, we would like to point out that we had refused some other bookings in order to accommodate this family.

“Truly French, Warm Hospitality”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2006

We stayed at the Chateau during Bastille Day and the arrival of the Tour de France at Carcassonne, about an hour away. Those dual events had filled most of the hotels and Chateaux in the region, and forced us to use a travel agent. It turned out that this situation resulted in one of our most pleasant stays during 3 weeks in Europe, and the most memorable. Our room was large, bright and comfortable. Monsieur and Madame de la Panouse (Count and Countess) were most charming and delightful to discuss history, current events, politics, and the local region of France. We found them to be refreshingly, truly French, not as worldly or cosmopolitan perhaps as our Parisian friends, but in a refreshing way, and still warmly welcoming to American tourists despite the occasional tension among our political leaders. We communicated well, in a combination of French and English. Since it was summer and hot, and the Chateau has no airconditioning, our windows had to be open at night. There was a surprising amount of traffic noise for such a very small village. We recommend the Chateau, but would ask for a room away from the street next time, and would avoid the hottest time of year. Note that the Chateau and its village are located in a rural area amidst miles and miles of sunflower fields with a number of interesting, small villages nearby waiting to be explored. Many of the roads are lined with trees on both sides, forming a canopy. As the Michelin guide might say, it's worth a detour.
