“Great Place. Classic French Gite”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2007

Was there out of season and we had the chance of taking a Room or a Farmhouse, in the end we went for the farmhouse.

We arrived to find half a tree (I kid you not, will try and upload image of fireplace) merrily burning in the hearth. Daniel was kind enough to prepare us a 4 course dinner that night using the best of local ingredients., easily the best dinner i have had in years (Fried potatoes stuffed with muscles!). Beware if he starts you off on the local home brew.

Le Mas du Pommier is a large, old framhouse with one Gite and 4 rooms, but Daniel is slowly adding more. It must be great in summer with its own swimming pool and breakfast balcony overlooking the river and lake

2.75 hours from Lyon, (and make sure you get good directions, there are many turns) and about 20 minutes away from the nearest large town of St Ambroix. This part of France you will either love or hate as it is showing signs of rural depopulation. Oh, you WILL need to be preapred to use your French.

“Fantastic rural location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 September 2006

How about a retired doctor who has renovated a 19th-century mill, has a pool, feeds you with food from his garden and runs a wee restaurant (for guests) is as good as any four-star restaurant?

My wife and I stayed here for 8 days earlier this month. Conveniently located to strike out and visit many of the medieval villages in and around the area (Les Vans, Thines, Banne, St Ambroix, etc), it is also in a great place for mountain walking and cycling. And for visiting vineyards and sampling wine! It's near the Ardeche area and there are lots of producers to choose from.

The owner is originally from northern France but has been renovating the property for many years. Although not finished, it was a fantastic place to stay in. He cooked too - four-course evening meals (with wine included in the price) one would die for. It was among some of the best meals I've ever eaten in France.

The only stipulation is that the owner has no English, so French is essential for at least one person staying there. If you cannot speak the language, go stay in a hotel.

He also has a gite which could cater for a family of four. It's fully equipped and was one of the best I'd ever seen (renovation completed in 2005).

This is a little gem tucked away in the hills! A fantastic place.

  • Liked — Friendly atomsphere, food and pool
  • Disliked — No internet access and access by car probably essential (although there's a railway station in St Ambroix)
  • Tips/Secrets — June and September best months to visit.
