“Relaxed Country House sStay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2011

Shahpura Bagh for me had a special resonance as it slightly resembled on a larger scale a home I had spent part of my childhood in India. The hosts are friendly people and we were given a splendid huge comfortable room with delightful efficient ensuite bathroom. The room has good tea making equipment with high quality tea which I appreciated. The Domestic Staff were all eager to please and our first meal at lunch was delightful. The pool is probably the most elegant of all the pools I have experienced in Rajasthan. We went and visited a nearby temple and also an old ruined fort from which we watched the sunset. A good interlude all round.

Room Tip: All the rooms were nice and spacious and comfortable

“What an experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 June 2011

Loved this hotel for a number for reasons. Firstly we were lucky enough to have the place almost to ourselves and managed to grab an uninterupted afternoon by the pool which was a welcome relaxation break in the middle of our fairly hectic schedule in India. In fact if you are looking for somewhere to break up a trip, Shahpura Bagh is perfect place to chill out. We also really enjoyed the trip out to the nearby villages to see rural life close up. The locals all seemed genuinely friendly and as interested to see us as we were to see them. The sunset trip to the family fort is a must do whilst here, 360 degree views and atmospheric semi ruined interior. Lastly the owners were charming, coming to talk to you before dinner without being intrusive. The food was was plentiful and enjoyable.

“Oasis of peace”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 May 2011

we found this oasis of peace via our excellent and highly recommended India based travel agent ( Travel Pals India ) .
We are generally five star hotel people and shahpura is not in that catagory .However, do not let that put you off one little bit ,we loved it and would have extended our 2 day rest break to 3 days if time had allowed ( we were in India for 3 weeks ) .
The slightly faded main house is an atmospheric reminder of the days of The Raj but beatiful and traditional internally where there is a dining room and lounge/library area .
The guest rooms are a very spacious conversion from buildings of former use in the very spacious grounds ,lots of bird life but the website is misleading because the lake does not exist beyond a few weeks during the monsoon ( if at all ) ,I am frankly suprised the owners make use of a misleading image .
Rooms are nicely furnished ,clean ,well equipped and perfectly adequate. No air conditioning could be a problem if you are daft enough to visit India in high summer .
A superb swimming pool with shaded and private rest areas is a recent addition . Evening drinks by the pool with fellow guests and members of the family is a delightful tradition without being organised or touristy .
Meals are taken buffet style in the main residence dining room ,usually on tables set for 4 persons . We had no problem with the food ( i am not a fan of spicey indian dishes ) and there was adequate choice to suit all tastes ,i heard no complaints at all from fellow guests and i was suprised to see some negative comments on other reveiws .
My wife had been suffering from the tummy troubles for 3 days before we arrived ,the owner kindly called her own doctor who arrived within 30 minutes and administered a couple of pills from his black bag .She was fit and well again in 8 hours and there was no extra charge on the bill .
We wandered freely around the local village ,a short walk from the hotel . What a refreshing change to wander around the market and shops with only smiling friendly faces to greet you and no hassle to buy or bargain for prices . If you want to buy you ask the price , the shopkeeper tells you and you either purchase or say no thank you , simple i know but so rare in the tourist places of India
No hesitation in recommending this charming hotel ,our previous stop was Taj Lake Palace at Udaipur so be assured we are used to comfort and quality as well as recognising a little gem when we find it

“Disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 March 2011

If the hotel matched up to the charm of its host and swimming pool that would be tremendous. Our room was sparse and rather uncomfortable but most of all the food was dreadful - the same every evening and sitting in dried-up buffets probably breeding evcery sort of germ. The access from the main highwaywas dreadful and tiring - even for India. Supposedly offering a taste of rural India I would recommend you go further south to the Centr\l Provinces and miss this out altogether.

“Lovely place to have a quiet break in India”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 March 2011

We stayed here for two nights and enjoyed the experience. The management was friendly and the tours interesting. The highlight for us was a walk in the village where we spent several hours meeting people and taking photos. In our three week hoiday in India we found that the further away from the tourist areas the more friendly the people. As with several places that we stayed we were impressed by the charity work that the owners do with the local village.
