“Stoked at Coral Rock”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

A day spent at Coral Rock is a day well-spent. That was the primary feeling we had after a two week stay in Zanzibar. Whether we spent the day snorkeling with the hotel's resident sea captain, 'Captain Chicken,' or taking a long walk on the sand-bar at low tide after a morning of reading by the lovely pool, it was hard to go wrong. We increasingly found ourselves planning the activities of our day based on high and low tide which, we decided, is a sure sign of a good day.

The staff and management at Coral Rock- who you will undoubtedly get to know during your stay- are warm and friendly and have no trouble remembering that you don't like tomatoes or suggesting the coldest beer on offer. The hybrid bar/restaurant/internet cafe is the literal hub of the resort and surrounding area; it's precarious placement atop a rock protruding over sea will make you feel far from your own kitchen table as you sip your morning mango juice.

If you want pretension and someone to clean your sunglasses for you, then this probably isn't the place to go. But if you want a laid-back, shoes off vibe, with friendly staff, fresh fish and reggae music wafting from the speakers, you'll be stoked at Coral Rock.

“Relaxation Extraordinairre!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

Coral Rock is the place to go for relaxation! The hotel is located in a quiet area, and you practically have the beach and sandbar to yourself! Meals are also really good at the restaurant, which has the most beautiful view over the sea, and there is a great vibe, with the restaurant staying open until late at night.

The rooms are small, but have all the necessary amenities, including air-conditioning. The hotel staff are also as friendly as they come, and are willing to teach tourists the language and be as helpful as possible.

The reception is also exceptional, and their on-site guides know all the best places to go to snorkel. Transfers are organised to Stone Town, and you can also organise excursions across the island through reception.

I went by myself, and did not feel worried at any time during my stay. The sand bar is also beautiful, although my only bugbear was that the night before I arrived, there was a huge storm, so what should have been a white beach was littered with kelp. Not really a problem though, as it was still worth the trip!

Room Tip: There is a big house available for larger groups, but if you'd like a quiet stay, pick the cotta...

“Mixed feelings: cockroaches & loud music at night”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

We stayed at the Coral Rock for three nights, and we experienced a mixture of both fantastic and unpleasant things.

What's great about this place is the location in the south of Jambiani, on a rock in a beautiful setting and with a magnificent seaview. The small pool is great. The food is good. Staff is friendly. Snorkeling with Captain Chicken was nice.

But:
- Everyday we had cockroaches in our room, the last night they were even running over my lips, and my girlfriends face. The staff was informed and shocked and used repellent to avoid this in the future. But i doubt if it would never happen again.

- Unforgivable: there was a party announced on Saturday. We were very tired, and living with the rhythm of the African sun, sleeping around 10PM. Which hotelmanager can forbid us that ?? The party in the bar felt like an earthquake in our room and lasted to 1:30am. I'm a musician myself, playing a lot of festivals. I have no problem with loud music. But this was like a too noisy crappy backstage on a big festival, when you're not interested in what's going on frontstage. We were on an adventurous African holiday, we're on safari & climbed mount Kilimanjaro, and booked Coral Rock as a final resting place, and this was the most expensive price/night we payed in our three weeks Tanzania-trip. But our last night was, with the cockroaches and extremely loud nightly music, the most horrible night we had in peaceful Africa.

- We rented bicycles of a small boy, because he was selling his service everyday near the swimming pool when we were taking a nice swim. We payed twice (!) the price of the renting service of a nearby hotel (Blue Oyster), and we had to repair them with some friendly locals in the village, because the bikes were crappy as hell.

- I have the feeling that the cool "surferboy"-owners built this really nice place for themselves and their friends, where client-service is less important then their own amusement.

Hi, thanks for your feedback. I've been the MD of Coral Rock for 7 years and I can honestly tell you that this is the first time I've heard of or seen a review mentioning cockroaches in the room. We fumigate 4 times a year and we have spray in each room for guests to use. That being said, if you say there are then we'll move forward our next fumigation to as soon we can possibly can. I welcome anyone to check online on the hundreds of reviews of Coral Rock on this and any other site for mention of cockroaches and you will see this is the first time it is mentioned. We've had no subsequent complaints about this either, so if you could inbox me the room number you stayed in I would appreciate it so we can get that looked at immediately.
Now, about the party, you must understand that we DO NOT throw regular parties - not even on New Year’s, because we do not wish to keep any guest up. When we do, we inform guests in advance. This party was planned on a date when there were only 5 rooms occupied at the hotel, all guests were placed as far as possible from the bar area except for two rooms. We went to both those rooms and offered them a free move and upgrade away from the bar. Both rooms refused and mentioned they were most keen to join the party. The information was put up on the board and no one came to us with concerns or complaints either before the party, during the party or after the party. We could have, at any stage, assisted you with a room further away (I'm still not sure what room you stayed in). We go out of our way to put our guests first and accommodate any feasible request. We throw events of that size maybe three or four times year at most and only when we're very quiet and have consulted all rooms close to the bar. Generally events like this are thrown at the request of guests themselves.
Another thing you should know is that the hotel does not rent out bicycles. We used to give out bikes to guests to use for free but they got so badly damaged we stopped. If you entered an agreement with a village child and compared the rate you paid this child to another hotel I don’t think it’s fair to list it as a negative aspect of Coral Rock itself. We also do not employ children, it’s illegal and unethical, this should have made you realise you were not dealing with Coral Rock when you rented a bicycle. I will however have a look into which children are offering guests bicycles for rent and ask them not to do so in the future. So I thank you for bringing this to our attention.
In all it’s a pity your stay and review thereof consisted of a first time issue, a very rare occurrence of a pre-planned party (which all the other guests were highly in favour of) and an interaction with someone not associated with the hotel. If you could take these three issues out, as they would be for the vast majority of people staying at Coral Rock, you’d find a different perspective all-together.
What the booking system also shows is that there were no early check-out during this period, which means that there was nothing regarding rooms or events that could have constituted a substantial enough an issue for someone to elect to leave Coral Rock, everyone was happy enough to stay on for the full duration of their bookings.

“Best place on the east coast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

We have been to Zanzibar east coast on the several times and this time, New Year 2012, we stayed in Jambiani. We had a nice time at Coral Rock. Our banda (room) had a good standard, i.e. AC, ceiling fan, king size bed á la Zanzibar, a bathroom with working shower and outside a private patio with sea view. Restaurant with superior seafood.

“We LOVED IT!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2012

We went to Zanzibar at the End of April 2011 and stayed at Coral Rock hotel for 10 nights.

After reading some bad reviews on trip advisor I was a bit worried but becuase it was a bit cheaper than the other hotels we chose to go there anyway and I am so glad that we chose Coral Rock.

I must say that there was a lot of building work going on in the rooms next to us and by the swimming pool but it did not bother us. The workers were only there during the day and we were not in our room the whole day.

ROOMS:
We stayed in Room D4 and later got upgraded to the superior room for the last 2 nights of our stay - I wish we had paid the small extra cost to stay in the superior delux room for the whole 10 days!

The room was basic but clean ~ for the price we were paying, we had no complaints.

The bathroom was a bit old but clean. We noticed that the bathrooms in the units further away from the restaurants were much nicer than the one that we had.

I recommend:
- Pay the small extra cost and book the superior delux room which is 10 times better than the standard rooms.

- If you are staying in a standard room ask for the rooms further away from the restaurant. "J" rooms. Less traffic infront of these rooms and the rooms are a bit bigger than the ones near the restaurant.

POOL:
The hotel has a stunning infinity pool over-looking the beach and it is the BEST place to chill out during the day sipping on cocktails! Yes it is a small pool, but it's OK! You don't need to be able to swim laps in the pool!

BEACH:
It's a very long and quiet beach. So if you are looking for a relaxing holiday this is the perfect setting.

There was quite a bit of sea-weed on the beach and in the water. But if you take a short walk up the beach, there is a big clearing where you can swim in crystal clear water. I was a little disappointed about the to discover that there was so much sea-weed but it did not spoil our holiday at all.

Just check with the hotel which time of the year they have the least amount of seaweed in the water... Apparently December is the worst time for seaweed on the beach!

RESTAURANT:
Ignore the reviews that said the food was horrible! It's delicious! This is NOT a 5 star hotel but it does have its own rustic charm and the food is great. Yes, the service is slow but who cares! RELAX! you are on HOLIDAY!!!! The waiters are super friendly.

DAY TRIPS FROM THE HOTEL:
The hotel has a guy (not employed by the hotel) who will offer you some days trips to stone town, spice tour, snorkeling etc. His prices are very expensive compared to what you will find in the busier towns in the north of the island but they are still not bad. I would rather choose the convenience of booking with him than wasting time looking around for a cheaper price. If it it within your budget, then do it!

I recommend that you do the SAFARI BLU SNORKELING AND LUNCH ON THE ISLAND (day trip)!!! It is an AWESOME experience!

Room Tip: Pay the extra and book the superior delux room. It's worth it! Ask for the rooms further away...
