In need of a place to stay overnight before a morning ferry crossing from Cairnryan, I found Rhins of Galloway online. Intrigued by a reasonably priced guesthouse with uniformly glowing reviews, I booked it, and I was not disappointed. I can give feedback on two of the guestrooms, since my parents were also staying there and had a double room (which was actually more like a suite) and I had a single room of my own.
Arriving to a warm welcome from one of the proprietors, we were instantly impressed by the clean and welcoming feel of the place. As well as the free wireless and computer access, fresh flasks of milk were offered to us to use instead of the UHT milk supplied in the room for tea and coffee (ceramic teapots available on request). Given the time of year, we were also offered sherry and mince pies (all complimentary).
My single room was very nice – clean as that of a Travelodge, but more nicely appointed with nicer furniture and linens, an en suite bath and shower, free toiletries, freeview television, etc. My parents “room” included both a bedroom and a small living room with a couch and armchair, large-screen tv and all mod-cons. The rooms exceeded all expectations.
The next morning, we headed to the breakfast room, which was nicely furnished, and contained all the ingredients for a full continental breakfast: you could help yourself to fresh fruit, yoghurt, a variety of cereals, bread for toasting, butter, jams, fresh fruit juices, water, etc. Paul and John, the friendly proprietors, then took our orders for tea, coffee, and cooked food, and well, we are still raving about the eggs!
Anyway, I could go on, but it comes down to this: if you have the opportunity, book it! You won’t be disappointed. We were passing through Cairnryan en route home (we’d been taking the ferry to Larne) and decided to stay there again on the way back – just as good as the previous week.
