“Yes, but...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 July 2010

Powersfield House and garden looked impressive as we drove in and we were eagerly anticipating being shown inside. We knocked several times on the front door to no response. Finally the door open and a foreign chambermaid said "The rooms are not ready yet".
What a let-down, and certainly not the cead mile failte one expects in this price range!
With a little prompting, the girl agreed to give me a key and let us leave our bags.
We returned later and finally saw our room, a twin which was compact but nicely decorated. We finally met our hostess when we knocked on the kitchen door to announce ourselves. Mrs Power was charm itself when we finally met her but our overriding impression was of a woman who is stretching herself a litlle too thinly.
Our breakfast was delicious but again our hostess was rushing off. She left in her car both during and after it.
This kind of upmarket guesthouse operation depends on the presence and personality of the hostess. Foreign staff are not an adequate stand-in. Mrs Power also has a catering business as well as a young family. We felt her guesthouse had slipped down her list of priorities.

“Delightful. Stay!!!”

I frequently travel on business in the South East and am fed up with the usual and often mediocre standards offered by hotels. A friend suggested I base myself at Powersfield House when in Waterford. It was a perfect home away from home. Delightful rooms and wonderful breakfasts. Try the award winning porridge and rhubarb compote. Eunice and her charming sons made me feel so welcome. A perfect place to relax whether on business or leisure.

“Disappointed”

Mrs Powers offers demonstration cookery courses and so we were looking forward to great breakfasts during our stay. It is unfortunate that this was not to be. I enjoy soft fried aggs, but the white of the eggs that we were served was still runny and clear. The bacon that was served with the cooked breakfast was dry and overcooked (not to be confused with crispy).

Mrs Powers was conspicuous in her absence and we were left to deal with the aupair. This was not the personal service that we expected.

On our first morning at Powersfield house, the dining room had been hired for a business meeting; a table had been set for us in the small sitting room between the entrance hall and the dining room. During our meal we were subjected to a number of delegates moving backwards and forwards to and from the dining room; this does not make for a relaxing experience! Furthermore, my wife was hit on the head by a whiteboard which somebody was carrying to the meeting room!

Had we been advised that a meeting was to take place, we would have arranged for an earlier breakfast to avoid conflicting demands on space.

Although the bedroom was comfortable, it was not particularly well cleaned (skirting boards need dusting as well as furniture) and the bathroom could have done with a deep clean and re-decorating.

  • Liked — Not much.

“When can I come back!!!???”

Myself, my boyfriend and our one and a half year old heard about Powersfield when I saw Eunice Power ( the owner) on a morning cooking programme. A friend had also recomended a restaurant in the area called The Tannery. We booked a break, and brought the baby. The whole weeknd was perfect. Eunices welcome was second to none, and we felt so welcome and relaxed - even with all the extras of bringing a baby!! Her house is lovely, really relaxing. The rooms are great - beautiful bathrooms too. She even organised a babysitter (her suggestion) so we were able to out on our own for dinner. What a treat! We had an breakfast both mornings. Fresh baked bread, muesli, porridge, fresh juice. Anything you can thik of and all so wholesome!!! We cant wait to go back, best idea we have had in a long time, and certainly one of the best Irish break I have ever had.

  • Liked — the genuine welcome outstanding hospitality and service

“Not of luxury accommodation standard”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 August 2007

I stayed there recently with my husband and since the previous review, the standard of this B&B seems to have gone down. We were given the disabled access room at the back of the private quarters, which was fine with us. The bed was very comfy and the shower room fine, but that really could've done with a good deep clean. The room itself was clean.
Considering it's supposed to be a luxury accommodation, and for a charge of €120 for the night, I was expecting a bit more. Although advertised with tea/coffee facilities you had to go up to the first floor where the kettle was, fill the kettle up with water and wait for it to boil, then try and make your way back down without spilling it. There were no spoons either the second time I went for tea. If you really were disabled you would have had nothing as the girl working there left when we arrived (we got there around 6pm). The TV in the room was really tiny and you almost had to squint to see it.
For breakfast the portions were very stingy - only one slice of toast & bread per person. No refills of the small teapots, no juice offered and the portions of the hot breakfast was tiny. having read on the hotel website that the owner Eunice runs a cookery school I was expecting a lot more. Most B&Bs I've been to are generous with the food and usually do it buffet style for the cereals/juices etc.
