We stayed at Hotel Marinedda for 11 days at the end of August 2011 having booked the hotel through Thomson, flights with Easyjet and hired a car from Europcar. On arriving at the hotel, our baggage was immediately collected from the car by the porters and we were taken from reception to our room by golf buggy which was a fun way to start the holiday. The rooms are very spacious and nicely decorated with good air conditioning. The rooms are located in clusters throughout the resort, centred around the restaurants and pools, with the majority being within a few minutes’ walk from the centre. This gives a good amount of privacy, especially on the terraces which are nice to sit out on and read or relax. The private beach charges for the use of the sunbeds but we found that the beach towels supplied by the hotel laid on the sand were just as good! The beach was busy whilst we were there and on a few occasions there was loud music playing which was fairly annoying to say the least. The buffet restaurant was the best I have ever experienced, delicious dishes, a variety of different specials every night with plenty to choose from and quality you would expect from an a-la-carte restaurant. It was so good in fact, we didn’t even try the alternative restaurant. Other things to do whilst you are there include the water park just up the road from the hotel which is only open in July and August. There are excursions that you can arrange through the hotel with transport provided or if you have a car you can arrange them yourself, often for a better price. We took a boat trip to see the Archipelagos (small islands) from Santa Teresa Gallura which stopped on a couple of islands (Isola Spargi & Isola Santa Maria) for sunbathing and swimming in the beautifully clear water and another island for a spot of shopping in the town. Another day we drove to La Pelosa Beach (north of Stintino) which has tropical, Caribbean-like blue water surrounding a small tower rising from the rock beneath the sea, one of the most beautiful beaches I have been to, but very busy and overcrowded. The most stunning place we visited during our stay was definitely Costa Paradiso, a short drive from Isola Rossa and a walk across the rocks to access the secluded bay, certainly worth a visit. We drove to Costa Smeralda to visit Porto Cervo, renowned for its style and class. There were some spectacularly extravagant yachts in the marina but don’t bother making a special trip; it’s tasteless, tacky and expensive. One thing that we didn’t realise when booking the holiday is that the majority of the buildings in Sardinia have no historical architecture as they have all been built in the last several decades. You will struggle to find a tasteful, historic village on the Sardinian coast, even Isola Rossa lacks the traditional charm that you expect to find in most other Italian villages. In all, a great holiday but not somewhere special enough to return to.
