This was our first visit to Rhodes and we stayed in Rhodes Town as it has lots of culture and history but can also double as a beach holiday with great places to eat.
We chose a hotel based on budget (usually middle of the road) and location. My personal favourite is a balcony with a great view. The Rhodos Beach Hotel satisfied everything. This is not a hotel if you are looking for luxury: although a 3* I would personally say a 2*+ but that said the staff were brilliant - nothing is too much trouble for them. And they are very friendly. Magda at Reception greeted us on arrival and gave us all the information we needed. I had e-mailed prior to our arrival and it was answered very prompted by management. I had asked for air-con, a kettle and a safe in room and it had all been arranged. Air con is an extra 6 euros per day outside of July and August. The safe is a must and you are given your own key. The kettle for us is also a must and you are also provided with mugs and tea spoons.
I would recommend a sea-view. In our view (no pun intended) is a must. The hotels on the west side of Rhodes Town have the most fantasic view of the sun setting behind the Turkish mountains. We would come back from the beach, have a shower, settle with a drink and enjoy the sunset before venturing out for dinner. Perfect.
The rooms are basic but we had a large built-in wardrobe, 2 chairs, a table and shelves so it was fine. The rooms are pleasantly decorated in blue and white and were kept very clean. The balconies are a good size with a table and chairs and a line for drying clothes if needed. Rooms are cleaned everyday.
The hotel has internet access at a charge - you can buy cards at Reception. There is an informal book exchange which was handy. The breakfast was very good with lots of choice. Although we were only on a B&B basis we did go to the Belvedere next door for dinner once which is buffet style (if you are not half board you can buy a dinner voucher at Reception for 10 euros) and we were very impressed - staff were good and food good value for price. The bar in the Belvedere is also nice but so is the Rhodos Beach with Antonis the bar man being a very good host.
We didn't use the pool at either hotel as we are beach people but both looked fine with the Belvedere being the largest and not subject to any shade in the afternoon. Both looked very clean.
One great bonus is having a proper sized fridge in your room - a must in the heat and to keep your milk, water, ouzo, beer and wine chilled!!!!
The location is perfect. literatly a minute to the beach across the road, there is a hotel supermarket which had everything we needed, 10/12 mins walk to Old Town and Harbour or 10/12 mins walk to the main town beach, Elli Beach. Personally we prefered the hotel beach as it was less crowded and there was more breeze. All beaches however are very well organised with on beach snack shops which are not particularly expensive. We went to Elli beach for one day but it was too packed for us with no breeze so was too hot for us. Swimming is however better at Elli as the sea is calmer. All beaches are shingly but a good amount of sand as well.
The West side of the town is the windier, with some days windier than others but to be honest it was a welcome relief from the heat. We went on 23rd June until 7th July and we could feel the temperature rising towards the end. I don't think we could have coped with it any hotter.
One thing I was pleased about was that there didn't seem to be any flies or wasps around. I had a bite or two but nothing much.
Rhodes Town itself is gorgeous - in two weeks we still didn't get to see everyting. There is so much history although much of the town has given way to shops, restaurants, bars etc there is still something for everyone. Try to go to the backstreets where you will find more peace and great tavernas. We would recommend Romios for a very sophisticated atmostphere but very competitively priced with great choice. Yiannis for a traditional taverna feel - very reasonable and Marco Polo for an Italian experience - beautiful.
A must is to see Lindos by boat but shop around - check out how long you are actually in Lindos for. When you get there I would recommend a donkey taxi to take you up to the Acropolis or the small village. We also had a day trip to Marmaris but don't expect character there - it has only existed since the mid-eighties but we had an organised day where we visited some places so we were glad we went.
In Rhodes Town you must do the little train ride which you can get from near the bus station. It takes about 45 minutes and gives you a good tour of the town and surrounding area.
Overall we had a great holiday and would certainly stay again, and at the Rhodoes Beach - it makes a great base. Do contact me if there is anything else you want to know or any advice on Rhodes Town.
