“Blue Sky V Ourania”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 December 2011

Went to Petra twice last year (2011), yes it was that good. Stayed at both apartments so thought I would share my experiences.

Blue sky…Rooms are massive and very clean. Apartment is well situated in the centre of the resport..50 meters from the village centre and the beach. The bar food is basic but Ok and service is normally good. The pool is good as are the sun loungers, can be a sun trap.
The only down side is the marmite man Anthony…you either love him of hate him. He is a know it all and loud, as well as the owner’s son (he’s a lovely man)... He is normally in charge of the evening entertainment, so if like us you are the latter, then there are hundreds of other places to go. You are close to the church so get the 7.00am wake up call and a good selection of noise coming from the fish vendors patrolling the front try to sell their wares from 9.00am onwards..but you can close your windows to miss all this entertainment.

Ourania…Rooms are of normal Greek size, but the “bins” were only cleaned twice whilst we were there. The apartment is situated in a rural setting some 500 meters from the centre and beach (access via a dirt road, so take a torch) or 1000 meters via the main road. You do not get the village noise here that a mention previously. The food is fantastic and the mixed grill is a particular favorite…as is the mousaka. The pool is good as are the loungers. The owner is a bit on the grumpy side but this is made up for by the daughter and wife who are real friendly…tip… buy him an evening drink early on in your holiday and he melts a bit!!!.

Which one would I choose…well, suggest you go and try them yourself…..you will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: A room at the back are quiter and cooler.

“Mixed review”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2011

Firstly the rooms were huge, clean and well equipped. The town itself was beautiful, the sea full of lovely fish to snorkel with and the island well worth a look around.

The best way I can describe the resort is an 18-30's style but for the over 40's. Our balcony faced the pool and bar area and so I had two very disturbed nights sleep (music, people vomiting and Anthony's bellowing voice etc.) however everyone was very friendly and we enjoyed a beer in the bar on a number of occasions.

I unfortunately had a bump in the hire car on the last day of my holiday and was quite shaken up, my fellow guests and George the owner of the hotel were wonderful and made me thankful that I was in such a friendly resort.

Places to go to:
Number 1 hire company, down the side of the football pitch. If you hire their cars be warned there's a unlisted $300 excess. Alex the owner does a wonderful glass bottom boat trip out to Rabbit Island on Mondays and it was the best day of my holiday.
The Lucky Horse Shoe on the sea front, a little past the football pitch. Lovely food and great service.
The Women's Cooperative. On the square up above one of the cafes. The best meal by far and I only wish we'd have gone there more often. The service was incredible. My partner was cold (we were on the balcony in the evening) and the waitress came and wrapped a shawl around her shoulders.
Reef. Did a lovely breakfast and for $15 will do a bag of washing (great for beach towels).

Room Tip: Ask to be placed at the back of the hotel, away from the bar area.

“Lovely place.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 October 2011

We had a nice time at the Blue Sky, the rooms were huge sompared to some places, very clean with good kitchen and bathroom facilities.
The pool area was very nice, lots of sun loungers and it is quite the sun trap! The pool was freezing due to it being October but that was only to be expected.
Also if you have a wander around the back you will find a lovely vegetable garden with squashes, peppers, tomatoes, chillies, aubergienes, grapes and pomegranits growing among others as well as a chicken coop and some geese which was nice to see.
The owner George is lovely, he always has a smile and works hard to keep the place in good condition.

We only found 2 things a bit offputting which were:
We were a bit loud on the 2nd night due to excess ouzo and talking untill the early hours, George had a quiet word, saying "it's ok, you're on your holidays, just try to keep it down in future" which was fine, all was forgotten for another day untill the son Anthony decided to talk to us like a group of 4 year olds in front of everyone in the bar. He was quite abrassive about it and said (loudly) "don't do it again! ok?" He then spent the rest of the week pretty much ignoring us or if he had to speak to us it was curt and sullen.
The other thing is that there was a very obvious divide on the first night between the people who go there every year and the people who just arrived with half on one side of the bar and half on the other, this created a bit of an atmosphere for us which we overcame toward the end of the holiday.

Petra itself is a lovely place to stay, the tavernas and shops are nice, the beer and food were fantastic and it was great that there is not an english "pub" in sight!.
The places near to the pier tended to be a bit over priced but further along the main drag there were some gems!
The food in the Lucky Horseshoe was fantastic, it's run by a mother and son who were very welcoming and always had a smile and a wave when we walked past afterwards.
The bar next door was great for a cold glass of Alpha or Mythos, I can't remember what it was called now but it's run by a guy called Tim and his dad who were both lovelly, my partner asked Tim where the fishing shop was on our first visit as he wanted to buy a rod but Tim insited that he borrow his and just bring it back before we leave.

So all in all I found Blue Sky studios a nice place to stay but generally gave the pool bar a miss unless it was one for the road on the way home, we did attend the end of season BBQ but found it to be a tad over priced for what it was and now wish that we'd gone out to a taverna rather than spend the last night there.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are quieter than pool view rooms, you can still hear the bar but not loudly enough...

“Just as nice as last year”

Had a lovely time at the Blue Sky, its our second time and we intend to return next year. The village is lovely and very greek. No British bars etc., We went to the Greek Night at the Traditional Restaurant at the back of the village. Lovely food and we really enjoyed ourselves. All the bars and restaurants are lovely, with a nice atmosphere and good reasonably priced food and drink. The Blue Sky apartments are very spacious and clean and the family who run them are welcoming and lovely people.

“Lovely most of the time.......”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 September 2011

We had a lovely holiday at this hotel, not our first so we knew it would be good. Its a lovely little hotel run by George, Maria and their son Antony.
The setting is gorgeous and the rooms very clean and spacious but basic.
Lots of lovely tavernas to eat in and the locals are very friendly, unfortunately the village of Petra has gone downhill slightly with a few tavernas in the village closed and quite alot of litter everywhere.
This is a lovely place to spend a relaxing break but Antony, the son, has some serious issues mainly regarding his attitude towards children, if they dont conform or are two noisy then he will tell them. He very much likes things his own way and when that doesnt happen is like a bear with a sore head, telling children to not jump on lilos, taking balls away if they are too noisy and the tv in the lounge area is no longer allowed to be used as it has been before also if your child cant play pool then its a no go area and you will be expected to stay and watch them, its a shame as i first went 6 years ago and he just seems to get grumpier each year unless you are size 8 and from Holland then you will be ok!!

Room Tip: All the rooms are lovely, the ones over the reception area have huge balconies and double beds.
