“Porto Platanias 2011 update”

My wife and I revisited the Porto Platanias Beach Resort Hotel from late September to early October for two weeks this year. It was just as delightful as before. Sadly, in the Chania area, there are a few signs of the economic situation beginning to have an effect with one or two shops and restaurants closed down. However, the local people are as warm and welcoming as ever and the hotel seems largely unaffected. The hotel continues to attract many Scandinavian holidaymakers and many more are now taking up the all-inclusive option. We decided to go half-board again as we wished to travel and eat out at times, The standard of meals in the main restaurant remains very high with a varied selection. Our room was clean and tidy with a view of one of the pools and a sea view. The restaurant staff and chambermaids are as polite and helpful as ever. They all seem to work very hard for long hours. All in all, a lovely location for a relaxing holiday.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view preferably overlooking the beach

“This is more like a 3star hotel..”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 October 2011

This is a nice hotel, but not a five star. When we arrived at night there were no bell boys to take our luggage and the receptionist didn´t seem to speak very good english, making it difficult to ask questions like where the breakfast buffet where and if we could get a map for the hotel. This is a big hotel and may see a bit confusing the first days.

The hotel part is clean and the maids and bar/waiters are very helpful and nice. It´s a shame they put people who doesn´t like their job in the reception. We were going back with a late plane and asked if it was possible to book the room for another day. The answer was that we needed to come back later so they could check if the room were occupied. This happened 3 times. At the day before check out, they told us that the room was occupied and we had to come after breakfast to see if there were another room which we then would be charged 60€ for the time we needed the room after check out. Not very costumer friendly.

The guests at the hotel reserve the sun beds at the pool, even though there are signs everywhere that the their towels will be removed. We got up at 8 am and still we had problems finding free sun beds.. The people who had reserved often didn´t arrive at the pool before after breakfast around 11am and then left for lunch around 1pm. The hotel staff didn´t do anything about it even though we asked. Either removed signs or do something about it! We also found it wierd that the sun beds at the beach cost 8€ (for two) on a all inclusive hotel.

The rooms were nice, a bit old, but clean. The maid were very sweet and even cleaned our nightstands stocking all our mess into piles.
The beds are HARD! Don´t even think about booking this hotel if you have problems with your back. Pillows are nice though.

The food in the breakfast buffet were very good. Not everything was our taste, but you have a lot to chose from. The staff cleans your table quick. (some times too quick)

The spa is the most positive experience about the whole hotel. The staff are very friendly but yet professional. The prices are not bad compared to Norway. it is also possible to just relax, use the indoor heated pool, take sauna, footbaths and experience showers. The products they use for the treatments are available one the spashop. They are a bit expensive but worth every €.

All over we liked the Porto Platanias, but there are a bit too much "flaws" which don´t make this a 5star hotel more like a 3star. Staff not counting the people in reception are very helpful and says hello every day. The bartender in the "Hermes lounge bar" is so nice getting us fruits and nuts with our drinks.

If you go to Platanias and want to stay at a 5star hotel we would not recommend this.

“2 weeks in an over rated hotel,”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2011

My wife and I along with our cousin and his wife stayed at this hotel for 2 weeks. we as a party have visited Crete (Chania area) eight times in the last six years and we were disappointed with this hotel. The fridge had no freezer section, pointed ends of nails protruded down one side of the wardrobe. the beds were very uncomfortable especially if one suffers from hip problems.
Staff in the Helios restaurant were rather indifferent but friendly enough.I speak average Greek but hardly any response from the Greek staff through the Hotel. The cleaners were slap dash and when my wife and I returned to our room one afternoon we were totally unaware the floor was wet from cleaning I slipped over and so severely hurt my hip, shoulder and side of head that we had to send for the Doctor (100 Euros)
There are a few ramps for disabled but no entry exit to any of the pools. My wife spent 2 weeks unable to use them.
The brochure mentions the Spa but doesnt say that even if you are All Inclusive a charge of 15 euros was demanded.
The dress code fully stipulates that no shorts or beach ware/pool ware is to be worn at dinner, this was flagrantly abused and when mentioned to restaurant staff and head honcho we were totally ignored on each occasion .
I have penned these complaints to the General Manager of the hotel and also to Olympic
Needless to say our 2012 Cretan holiday will most certainly be at another residence.
We are not snobs but retired working people and we demand value for our hard earned cash.

Room Tip: Speak to someone who has been there, do your homework before booking this hotel

“One of the best hotels in Porto Platania, Chania”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2011

My wife and I enjoy luxury hotels and the Porto Plataias Beach Resort and Spa is typical of those we enjoy staying at. We found the staff courteous and helpful and the food at breakfast was excellent. We like to choose different restaurants to eat out in the evenings so only booked bed and breakfast. The swimming pool (5 off) were clean and sunbeds were in good condition around the pool. Although our room wasn't ready on our arrival they put us in a suite with its own pool for the first night so that compensated somewhat for the inconvenience. Also the hotel owner's daughter was having her wedding reception at the hotel and all hotel guests were given a letter of appologies for any inconvenience caused as well as a present of honey cake and coated almonds. We actually watched the wedding reception from the balcony of one of the bars before going out to eat ourselves. When we changed rooms we also got a better room (larger) than we were going to get (also because of the inconvenience of not having our room ready when we arrived). We have stayed at more selubrious hotels over our years of holidaying but overall this was a very good hotel for us, very conveniently situated on the beach with its own mostly sandy bay (some pebbles leading edge of the water but sandy after a few feet and on the beach itself) next to a little port area for small boats. It was central to eat out and shop at either Agia Marina or Porto Platania with plenty of choice and also a short cheap bus ride from Chania town. The area around the hotel is very tourist orientated with lots of shops (selling similar touristy items) and restaurants and I can recommend 'The Olive Tree' and also to climb up to 'The Platanias Palace' restaurant for the views at night.

Room Tip: Views are of the pools or the beach so it depends on what you want but some rooms faced the beach an...
